The History of Ballistics Section of An Garda Siochana since 1934.

Lecturer: Detective Inspector Kevin Brooks of An Garda Siochana, Ballistic Section.

    ________________________________________________________________

An excellent Lecture with some historical information that would be of interest to people in the VCRAI. The bases of the lecture was to do with the formation of the Ballistics section within An Garda Siochana, it History, its functions, equipment and the sciences that are involved in solving crime from a forensic and ballistics point of view.

Detective Inspector Brooks spoke about a very interesting item that was found while the Ballistic Section were involved in the destruction of some old firearms in one of the Military Barracks, a Webley .455 revolver was produced to be destroyed. But before it could be destroyed it either fell to the ground or something fell on it breaking the pistols grips, it was noticed that it had writing on the inside of one of the grips, on inspection it was found to have this inscribed (M Collins 1922) , fair play to the Garda Ballistic people that were there, they did not allow it's destruction because of the possibility of it having historic value.

It is hoped that the National Museum will take it for study and that it will end up on display.

Thanks to An Garda Siochana and the National Museum for this interesting lecture and we look forward to many more on historical firearms.
