Well im down again this week, have had 4 consecutve losing weeks in a row now, mostly betting horses and soccer. Down about 250 quid in total. Really feel like i should give it up now but keep thinking i should stick at it and turn it around. What is story, is anyone winning at gambling at all, or is it true what they say 'the bookie always wins'?

I guess it depends why you gamble. Some people do it for fun and the chance they might win something but mainly for the fun. Others do it professionally and make a living out of it.

Personally I think it's a bad idea to chase your losses or gamble with money you don't have.

If you're down 250EUR then don't gamble more to try and get it back. Just leave the gambling for a while until your finances improve and then if you feel you want to you can have another go.

    My thoughts just ..

I've had 3 big wins in a row over the past 2 weeks. I've banked all my money and I am going to take a break for a week or so. I feel its harder to walk away when you are losing as you are always thinking, one win and I'll break even. My only rule in gambling is only bet what you can afford to lose.

On a brutal run too, last night done a single just, Mk Dons at home 2-0 up after about 20mins, had my luck changed, no way, Crewe come back to draw 2-2. Time out for a while me thinks:(

Depends what you bet on in some ways and also how good a judge you are on whatever sport eg horses/football/dogs, if you are a fair judge then keep to level stakes and things will turn for the better....

Also to echo the sentiments on here - only punt with money you can afford to lose, and dont go on tilt(ie chasing!)

Just stick €250 on Black. If Wesley Snipes knows anything, he knows roulette. Sorted.

You are obviously only betting for fun(€250 loss in 4 wks), but are betting outside of your comfort zone. Stay within your limits and enjoy it.

Take a week or two away from it and then go back and start again

As mentioned, only gamble what you can afford to lose

Basically walk buddy while you have the chance. It never fails to surprise me how intelligent people fail to recogonize that they don't have the knowledge to make it pay. They are basing there opinions and bets on another mans opinions and bets.Mostly, the racing post spotlight writer. That is just madness. If he was any good he wouldn't be writing it either. He'd be making plenty somewhere.Simon Mapletoft writes the jumps spotlight sometimes!
I make a living from gambling but am not much good at analysising races before the off and am honest enough to admit it. I have a friend who does though.
This is a mail from him..

These are the people you are ultimately betting against.Guys that work ten hours days perfecting their craft. This is not an easy game.Always accord it the respect it deserves.

Strange advice ramtha regards eseej the key to this horse is getting an easy lead there is no way I could back this horse unless he is leading. He has won his last 2 races and has done so by getting an uncontested lead and kicking from the front

As I said I'm not a form expert, I was just highlighting what kind of people you are betting against. This guy is a good judge and I was just giving an example of a selection and the knowledge of the horses he was betting on. In relation to Eseej, I don't think he has to make it.

"Eseej is normally a front runner but that role was filled by Colonel Sherman so he had to be content to track the pace. He battled on for pressure and had every chance, but the winner was much too strong."

He ran second here and that would suggest to me that he is capable of winning a race where he doesn't make it if things fell right. But this game is all about opinions !

are we on about the same horse eseej was well beaten in wolverhampton last night and had previously won his last 2 races.
or maybe it is an old email but you are correct and right there are lads out there who know their stuff and put in 8 hour days studying and always seem to be on horses at the right price

It was an old email... But basically PC World what I (we're!) saying is be very wide with gambling. I put myself through a lot of s#** because I was too naive to know any different and hate to see anyone embarking on a similar path. The glossy green Paddy Powers would take your soul if you let them and you can't get a pound on if your a winner. Bastards the lot of 'em!!!!! Your missing nothing.

    i know this because of
    a) the competition that they get into to open new shops
    b) the amount of new shops
    c) the amount of money i am making on betfair recently

i was making money on their exchange games and betting my profits on football and not doing well there. then when united played liverpool i had huge funds ready to play with but couldn't get the odds i wanted on five different opportunities, all based on statistics.
and guess what - all five went down, proving to me that i am crap at tipping/backing !!

have stayed with the bookies side of things and am now at profit level of 280% wrt original bank over the last 2 months alone.
I have an odd tenner/score if i'm in the bookies (and all these bets have gone down too !!) the bookie always wins

Agreed King completely ref PP, if you have any sort of clue about what you are punting on then they are not interested, however they would have no hesitation in taking the shirt off your back if you are a mug punter....

Remember years ago heading into PP shop in Mallow to back one of my mates dogs(was running on the BAGS at Sunderland), had 150 on at 5/4, dog won a short head, the manager in there had to ring security to authorise the payout!!! Nonsense....

    To the opening poster.

Try to think of betting as a contest between people with the bookmaker taking a profit for his services in providing the market. If you bet with traditional bookmakers their margin will be anything from say 5% up to 50%+. I bet with Betfair, unless it is a big event with a thin market on Betfair and I can bet a reasonable amount with a reputable bookmaker.

    Questions.
    1. Do you know the profit margin on the event before you bet?
    2. Do you analyse all competitors in the event?
    3. Do you have knowledge that others do not have?
    4. Do you spend a minimum of two or three hours analysing an event?

If you can not answer "yes" to every question you should not bet on the event.

I make a profit, but do not have many bets a year. I am not in a fever looking to bet. I often analyse an event and decide not to bet. Do you?

Big odds give big payouts. I like big odds.
