Anybody know where the cheapest place to buy one of these cams in ireland is? (Dublin preferred!)

The ability to release the sky hd box at home from rtes 9o'clock news would save a few arguements in the evening

typically €57 delivered from the UK. (heres one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OFFICIAL-MPEG4-HD-VIACCESS-2-CAM-VIACCESS-EXTRA_W0QQitemZ280312747689QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ConEle_SatCableFreeview_RL?hash=item280312747689&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318#ShippingPayment

You might get a cheap one here on this site. Some people have bought them without looking at the list for compatibility. It doesnt work in every TV. Check your TV is there.

If I was to go with a set top box, is there one out that can recieve these stations - within a reasonable price?

I moved out to the country and even with an outdoor antenna and psu, the analogue signal suffers from ghosting and interference from the neighbouring trees.

I'm guessing that the transmission protocol they are using now will be out of date by the time they actually launch a service?

No, The transmission standard is set - it wont be out of date - RTE NL is currently rolling out the DTT service. Service at present is on an engineering basis and will be subject to tweaking within that standard set. The launch is due in the coming months. Given present economic circumstances what is due to happen in 3 months could become 6 or 12. Who knows... Where in the country are you ?

What you will find is that products meeting the full spec are not fully/freely available on an el cheapo basis.

Outside of the detailed spec it really comes down to 2 requirements.

    1. MPEG4 H264: the STB processor must be able to receive these signals.

    2. MHEG5: This is called middleware and will be used for EPG/TEXT and interactive services.

In most cases there is no freely available cheap box that can do 1 + 2.

However if you just wish to receive the channels themselves without items listed at 2 then you can buy one for as little as an offer on ebay. The search term is "TNT HD" on ebay france (they use mpeg4 HD for commerical stations). Typically you will be looking at a sigmatek, techwood, sagem or netbox branded boxes - they normally have "HD" in their item name. El cheapo way........ Check in here if unsure that the box is not fully up to spec - must have TNT HD capability.

Alternatively look at the combo box route - which would allow for a combination of the free HD satelitte services (bbc's/itv's/ch4 e4 more4 sky news eurosport etc) togtether with DTT on the one remote/stb for €200.

key boxes are listed in a sticky on this board. The mvision hd200 combo does seem to be quiet popular at present

Thanks for the reply stb, it was very informative!

But good god, for two stations, it's simply not worth the effort!

I know it was said before, but i had tought the "target" market was the "lazy" person who didn't explore other options - such as free to air satellite or cheap cable!

Give the service a chance to officially launch. There wont be STB's available for engineering tests

Unless I read the docs wrong way back, I don't think there are plans to transmit the EPG via the MHEG stream. AFAIK, only interactive and text is using this.

Right now its a bog-standard DVB EPG stream thats being used and going on your compatibility points, recievers compliant with point 1 will also get EPG.

That is my understanding too. MHEG5 is to be used for text only initially. But I guess by specifying compliance to the MHEG-5 UK standard they have some flexibility to develop new features over time.

I ordered mine from HM-Sat.de on Jan 6th. They inform me that since that date, they didn't receive any shipments from DMM.

DMM themselves say that the first official shipments were made in December and that they were striving to supply the boxes in sufficnent quantity.

This does add up, because taking notes in early January from one of the forums (IHAD) I counted at least 20 people had ordered the box from the beginning of December and received them up into the start of January.

But since then, all has been quiet.. except for a fire last week that seemed to have destroyed the cars of at least 4 of their employees.. 3 Mercs, 1 Porsche.

I saw on one UK site over the weekend that they expect stock in the 1st week of April.

So I've just decided to sit and wait. The minute anything happens regarding this situation, I'll be shouting it from the rooftops. And when I do eventually get this little baby, I'll be posting plenty of review results regarding its use for sat and 3-Rock DTT use including, multiple parallel recordings, Freesat EPG etc etc.

True. I suppose what I should have said is that typically MHEG5 is used for digital text , subtitles, audio description and extra video streams.

However the fact that is a specified req could mean that it might be used for building basic and extended EPGs.

    How MHEG5 works
