    Hello,
    Thoughts people please........

I have web business to launch as one of new additional business activities. Ok, so the .com domain I wanted is registered elsewhere but lying dormant.

    So, do I -

    A) Contact the owner of the domain and seek to purchse it and in the process tip him off as to what i'm going to do business-wise online (because the domain spells out the business type/activity essentially). And he'll probalby want STUPID money for the name anyways.

    B) Register the .net version which is available and launch.

So, .com V's .net? Which is better? - business wise, Brand wise and internet technology wise with google etc?

    Your ideas/thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks,
    NIF:)

why not register the .net ... and maybe the .ie and then approach the .com - or a broker who can get the site for you ...i think sedo.com is a broker (hope posting the site is ok - if not please delete it - MODs)

best of luck with the venture.

Personally I wouldn't contact them. I'd look into .biz, .net, .eu, .ie (the latter two if it's more local market). As for brand awareness you can build that into your marketing anyway. You may need to include the tld as part of your business name but that shouldn't be a problem. At that stage - if necessary - you can initiate domain reclamation if the current owner of the .com is just squatting on it.

    Thanks!

The target market is here, the rest of europe and america and oz - global really too! So, go .net and .ie you reckon?
and re; SEO, whats best to go with?

Did you look up who owns it yet? An url I was looking at recently was being squatted on and it turned out to be owned by a company who sells them so that their info is on the whois, not yours. I could still have bought it from them cheap enough.

Yeah, i looked it up - its a private individual, maybe squating, maybe not. I want to keep my powder dry tho'.

Don't buy a .ie if your looking at a global marketplace.... Personally also advise against .eu, .biz etc... You NEVER see any of these ranking IMO. Are you stuck on that domain name-i.e can you register a similar .com one or is that out?

I'd go 100% with a .com-just do a Google search for anything and see how many .net, info, biz, eu domains you see on page one. I'm going to guess none.

Is this the domain that I think in a different post you thought had expired? If so have you tried GoDaddy to see can they secure for you? Also do you know was the domain used as a website before or not? If not and was only ever registered make the owner an offer your happy with as a last resort. He might bite your hand off for $100!

I'd register the .net, and any similar/relevant.com's, and then approach the owner and try and get the .com for something reasonable. You can negotiate down from silly money. I recently got a domain for €2k after the own originally priced it at €25,000. Google for domain price negotiating and similar keywords.

    Thanks Trojan and Hi D.W,

    yes, it is.
I did'nt try godaddy as of yet as i wanted to explore the opinions of others to see my next move - I'm not confident godaddy can get it for me anyhow going by the whois details, expiry dates, pending renewal times etc etc, its all very messy and non-informative from my regard.
