Thank Christ! That was a long break, can't even remember what happened at the season 4 finale! Because of the writers strike I think.

Thats April 7th on FX in the US btw. Also:
From Wikipedia:In March 2009, before season five even aired, the show was renewed for an 18 episode sixth season, with FX citing "amazing quality" for their decision.

    Can't wait!:D

    C'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon !!!!

    Thread renamed for discussion.

Apparently gone is the dark and depressing undertones throughout last season.. and the humour is more plentiful!

Always a good thing.. last season was probably the show's poorest.

I'm assuming Sky will pick up both seasons as well?

I'm pretty sure Sky have dropped it. Did they even air season 4?

    Cracking start.
Tommys rant when they were watching the home videos was priceless :D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭The Don

Good episode. I was expecting a bit more but now that I think about it, it really set everything up for the rest of the season. There were some excellent pieces. The start, the home movies and the end were the best. Good to see that Tommy is on form again. Did not expect to see
Michael J Fox, that is going to be good. The 3 guys owning and running the bar is going to be hilarious
. Sheila and the therapist was good, "Tommy is looking at your breasts". Did not expect his
cousin Mickey to go back on the drink.
. New Sean is in for it over
    Colleen
    .

Next week should be the section 8 review. The chief really has it in for Tommy.

Yeah sky dropped it, either RTE2 will hopefully show it or we'll have to acquire it elsewhere;)

I thought it was a great episode and really funny, too. Tommy's rant after watching the old home movie of his father was great. Loved seeing Michael J Fox on a tv show again. It's really sad what that disease has done to him. Did you notice he's slurring certain words now along with the constant shaking. :( Poor guy. His character was great, though. Can't wait to see more of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭The Don

Episode 2 was absolutely brilliant. Comedy gold from start to finish.
Mickey in the bar at the start was class, I would have believed him myself. Then getting Tommy to sponsor Kevin (or whatever it is :)) with him ringing constantly
. The french woman scenes were good, we all know where that is going. Sean trying to tell Tommy
    about him and Colleen
. The guys and the bar and then
at the end when they go to a bar thats exactly the same
    . Michael J Fox's scene was excellent,
finding out he's in a wheelchair and Janet telling Tommy how long he can last
    .

    Another great episode last night.
The scene where Lou rips into Tommy was  John Scurti is a fantastic actor. Not sure I like where this whole Psychic thing is going though. I always thought the 'ghosts' were Tommy's subconscious, the same way it was done on Six Feet Under. I don't like the idea of them being actual ghosts, if that's they way they're heading. I think there's a logical explanation for it, though. Maybe the psychic spoke to Tommy's cousin and he told her? Don't know why Tommy didn't just show someone else the tape. It was clearly the logical thing to do.

    I reckon....
Micky's been doing to see the phychic to talk about his dead dog or somethin and he's mentioning Tommy's problems to her. And I agree with the tape thing.

This is a much improved season - everyone's back on form and the humour is far more present. There's also the simmering anger there too - Lou lashing out at Tom was great, very well done, as was Tommy's rant against his late dad at the wake a few episodes ago.

Huh? Mikey's being going to her to talk to his mum and there's a whole scene where he talks about he talked to the psychic about Tommy - but there's no way he could have known about the video.

That's why I said Micky, or is it spelt Mickey? either way :P.

People are confusing Mike Silletti (The fireman who bought the bar) with Mickey Gavin (Tommy's cousin and AA sponser).

Mike went to the psychic and told her about Tommy and Jimmy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭chalkitdown1

Very good episode but also very sad. :( Some amazing acting on display. Michael J. Fox was hilarious. It's still hard to watch him shaking all the time, though. Odd that they completely ignored the Psychic storyline from last week, infact I don't think Probie was in this episode at all was he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭KerranJast

Fecking hell. That was unreal. There are so many actors in that show that can go from silly buddy comedy antics to deep meaningful moments. Callie Thorn (Sheila) was fantastic this week. The production team have really kicked it up a notch after the more erratic Season 4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭Drodan

Is it just me or is everything about this season just plain awesome in every form. The script is awesome, plot lines are awesome, character development is awesome, basically AWESOME.

Sheila's part at the end was amazing, like 5 solid minutes of quality acting.

    Not quite.

It was renewed for a season 6 way back even before season 5 aired!

Just after catching up with the latest episodes. Its been a great season so far. The storyline with the French woman and Lou has been great. As has the bar story. The episode where Tommy and Janet
visit Katy at her school was brilliant. The dinner scene and then afterwards in the room were great
. The last episode was amazing.
That scene in the bar was brilliantly executed and was top notch TV. They got through so much in it. A lot of other so called drama's would kill for a scene like that
    . Nice cliffhanger ending too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭chalkitdown1

Yeah, those opening 20 minutes of this weeks episode were amazing. Emmy for O'Leary, please.

    The scene where

    That was bloody hilarious.
I was expecting the rest of the guys to be imagined in like some weird Broadway chorus but the way they did it was genius.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭The Don

This weeks episode was really good as well.
Sean's musical was class and the drama element set Lou off to pick up Candy's number. I wonder is she genuine of whats up this time
. Tommy got a pretty good doing of it as well,
being caught with Janice and then Sheila giving him grief
. That cable guy was a great addition to the episode as was
the boxing chick with Franco. He's going to end up with bruises and having to explain it to the guys :D
    .

Hey lads and lassies, the thread title has "** Spoilers **" in it, so no need to tag episodes after they've aired in the States. If people come into this thread before they've seen the episodes, then its their own fault.

The only reason you need to use spoiler tags here is if you are discussing promos for future episodes.

Previously we had Zombie Sean. Now we have Sean in 'Yes I Can Sir - The Musical'. Even though the rest of the episode was good, it paled next to these moments of sheer genius - ending the way all musicals should with a double-barrelled shotgun. Moment of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

So after a long break, I'm finally caught up - watched the 11 episodes of this season in the last 4 days or so :). Great to see the show get back to its' former glory.

That was classic - for the first couple of seconds I was thinking WTF? But it just got funnier and funnier and indeed, the shotgun moment made it :D.

Great line from the Chief to Tommy (when he's with Janet in the car): "if it's not terribly inconvenient, could you join us for one of our little fire things?" :D. I love this show...

Excellent episode once again. Great song at the start when the guys fell through the floor (cgi was a bit dodgy though). Chief Feinberg taking Tommy's side is a bit ominous and I wonder what he has planned for him. Tommy and Lou making that bet really set the episode up nicely. The Gavin family dinner scene was really funny as was Tommy getting black Sean to go to it. They pulled off the dis-functional family really well. The nervous glances and quips, everybody playing happy families, the fighting while Katie was in the kitchen

The way this show goes from serious to funny in the same minute is just amazing. Sean's scene in the hospital with the guy's really feeling for him then cutting to the longer musical was great. Oh to be a vegetable! Then outside in the hall I really thought that Mike was cracking but when the nurse took him away and he turned to the guys and smiled had me in stitches. :D

I laughed so much at Tommy and Colleen kicking Sean all the time - poor black Sean :).

And I thought last week's musical number was funny - the tap dancing bit cracked me up :D.

Who would've thought? Mike has indeed come a long way: as Franco put it: "I've taught him too much" :).

But the entire episode had so many great laughs... Lou needing an hour (or an hour and a half) to clean out the bedroom, Sheila being her usual bats**t crazy self, Sean's brother saying "too much" to the guys...

Since they usually only do around 12 episodes a season, I really hope they can keep the quality up for the remaining 10, but so far, it has been going from strength to strength.

Lou "I just realised that I'm going to loose a bet" or "Whatever you do, don't open the fridge". It was pretty funny to see it unfolding after they had made the bet. Both for Tommy and Lou.

I hope they keep up the quality as well. There is a lot going on so they should be able to keep it interesting. Sean should be in recovery next week and I wonder how much of the musicals he'll remember.

I love the character of Sheila and she's played fantastically. She's able to go from ballbusting bitch to giggling schoolgirl in 10 seconds. :D

The scene with Tommy "cleaning up" the child after the crash was probably one of the most unsettling uncomfortable scenes I've seen on TV this year.

It was very odd.. nothing graphic was shown but the simulteanous disgust of the crew and the long single shot of Tommy's facial expressions was just absolutely heart-wrenching.

I know it's been said before.. but Denis Leary really does deserve more acclaim for this show. In fact, the entire cast do (with the exception of Lenny Clarke as Teddy.. who just never really impresses me and his performance just irritates me more than anything).

That was done so well - like you said, a pretty unsettling scene even though nothing graphic was shown but probably one of the best scenes ever to convey the kind of horrific s**t firefighters see on the job.

The musical numbers with Sean are getting a bit stale at this stage though. At least he's conscious now - the exchange with Teddy and the "get the pillow" line when he heard Maggie was coming to visit was funny.

Dark episode overall, the blow torch scene was painful... Sheila is beyond mental though...

And it only dawned on me yesterday how clever the writers have been with grown-up ghost Connor, as the kid playing him originally would now look considerably older and that wouldn't make a lot sense.

I'm worried about poor Ken though... he deserves some happiness but I still think Candy is going to screw him over in the end or something else will go wrong. Things are just a bit too good for him right now.

And what's happened to the french chick? She seems to have dropped off the map completely...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭chalkitdown1

The French woman is probably gone for good. Same with Michael J Fox. :o

I wonder if we'll be seeing Maury Tierney soon? She was supposed to be joining the show in the second half of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

The French woman is probably gone for good. Same with Michael J Fox. :o

But with Michael J. Fox they did have some closure to the whole story, though Janet pretty casually mentioned that things were over and that was pretty much the last we saw of him...

The french chick though, no mention of her lately though I guess the entire purpose of her arc was to get Tommy to watch the 9/11 footage and end up drinking again, etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭The Don

Tommy cleaning up the kid was eye opening alright. Firefighters do see some amount of bad things. Tommy with the blow torch was painful to watch. The guys saying that he's empty inside and then he tried to watch the family dvd to feel something and ended up burning a hole in his leg. It makes you think how numb you would feel if you went through all of it, the job and loosing a kid.

Sean is awake now and should be walking around again soon. I also think that Candy has some angle. Franco seemed to take seeing the kid pretty hard. I'm not sure if the boxing chick knew the full extent of what she was asking.

This weeks episode probably my favourite of the series so far. So funny.

Thought so too - nice contrast with last week which was particularly dark. The opening segment especially was very funny and some of the best lines came from Feinberg and Colleen instead of the guys...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭The Don

This weeks episode just kept getting funnier and funnier. From the opening to the 'nurse' in Sean's room, Franco being told Carla's swings the other way but Damien, The restaurant with Tommy and Sheila, etc. All great stuff. Damien is going to have a hard time in the house once he graduated :D. That kid who took the fire truck was a little ball*x.

Candy is definitely working something. Why does she want Lou to marry her. Is there some legal thing she wants to have if she's married?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Loved Mike strapping in the little girl saying it'll all be fine and then the truck turns sharply and he falls forward and screams "We’re all gonna die!!" :D
