    Hi Everyone

I was wondering whether anyone has studied Anthropology at Maynooth?

I would be keen to get their views on the course itself - interesting, challenging etc?

I am a mature age student who has also been asked to sit the written entrance exam this weekend - any hints / tips on that also appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind Regards
    Karimba

Hi Karimba, I'm a second year student of Anthropology and although the department is somewhat relaxed compared to others, it's a very interesting subject.

I have to say though, that First and Second year have been very different in terms of the workload and the range of subjects. In first year you're given set modules, second year you have more choice and smaller classes.

What is it you actually want to know?

Oh, and best of luck with the exam.

    Hi Rozabeez

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am delighted to hear that you find the Degree interesting. I have met with a member of the Anthropology division in Maynooth and definitely got that relaxed, personable vibe.

How did you find the workload in the first year?
Did you have many mature age students? How have they gotten on with the course?

Any ideas on what they may ask for the written entrance exam? It's been a while since I have had to write an essay.

Look forward to hearing from you and thank you once again.

    Regards
    Karimba

I've no idea what the entrance exam is about as I'm not a mature student, but I'd say that my class is about 30-40% mature students so you'd be fine!

First year work load was fine, I took it with Sociology and Celtic studies, I found Sociology much harder.

I'm in the same boat Karimba :)

Have the test on Saturday for Anthropology also.

Indeed it has been sometime since I have had to write an essay. Any speculation on what it may be on? Would you say they are looking for just a good essay format, or an actual essay on Anthropology.

Haven't had to write an essay since Leaving Cert in 2007.

I took the exam for Media a few years back...

If i remember correctly, most essay's for mature student entry into specialized Arts degrees consist of:

Why you are interested in the field?

Why do you want to study it?

What you hope to do with this degree?

An interest in the subject, clear articulation of ideas and proof that you can write to a certain standard is what they are looking for,it's not going to be an Anthropology exam.

I am a 1st yr mature student doing a double honours degree and anthropology is one of my courses. i will be dropping it next yr because my other 2 courses fit better in with my chosen career. But I have really enjoyed it. It is more demanding, I felt, compared to my other ones but it is very interesting. Great support from the department and tutors also. I would love to continue with it but theres no point for me to

Asking on behalf of someone else - how much do 1st, 2nd and 3rd year contribute to the overall degree result?

Asking on behalf of someone else - how much do 1st, 2nd and 3rd year contribute to the overall degree result?

    1st - not at all
    2nd - depends on 3rd year grades
3rd - definitely. Your degree result will either be 100% of your 3rd year grades OR 66% 3rd and 33% 2nd if that adds up to a higher result. You don't need to choose which one applies, it's done automatically.
