But glue a bit of perspex or similar onto the front of it, they can crack if they are hit.

The Australian army use the Elcan on theirs, they seem to think it's a good general-purpose sight.

3X might be a bit more magnification than we need for airsoft, so one of the unmagnified sights like an Aimpoint or ACOG (1.6X) might do just as well. I like the Eotechs myself, but whether they suit the A2 is a matter of opinion. Airsoft versions of all these sights are readily available.

Thats if you can find one in stock anywhere, the STAR one is no where to be found and only WGC has the G&G one back in stock, they only got it back a few weeks ago.

The G&G one is back in production, There was a period for a while when they weren't available but they have them now. I personally prefer the look of the Eotech on mine.

The SUSAT isn't RAS rail compatible as far as I recall. It's specific to the mount on the L85, which is why you only ever see it on them. In fact, there's a rail adaptor for the L85 that the British Army are using now which gives them a 20mm RAS strip so they can use ACOGs.

The problem with putting a sight on the A2 is the rail is so long you need something that either fills it, or makes it look full. Something like an CompM2 Aimpoint with a straight mount or the same Aimpoint on a LaRue QD mount and a flip-aside magnifier. Those mounts are low profile, but that's offset by the raised nature of the rail on the A2, so it'll be quite comfortable.
There's also a CompM4 scope which is, again, quite low profile and rather more solid looking but would suit too.
The tube-sight set-up of the Aimpoint will make the rail seem a lot more full than it is. Using the flip-aside gives the Aimpoint a great versatility and will allow you to fill most of the rail without turning it into a "1337 sn1p3r!".

A long EoTech, like the 552, would also look well as it has the length, but also a graduated increase in height which apes the front end of the A2 anyway. Again, this could be couple with a flip-aside magnifier if you wanted something with a bit of range (though you'd hardly need it, some find them useful).

I'd shy away from ACOGs, ELCANs and the like personally. While effective sights, I don't find them comfortable on that rail (particularly the ACOG which just doesn't seem to have a comfortable position).

The A3 is not bad at all, I like the look of it, even if the JG is severly front heavy.

With a stanag mags, I'd seriously consider it

Forget an ACOG, IMO they just look stupid on AUGs, keep them for the RIS monsters out there. ELCAN, perfect, Eotechs even better. Check ebaybanned for cheap eothechs, or RSOV.

Theres nothin wrong with an Eotech on an AUG.... well, to be quite honest, its not really fair on the eotech to mount it on something as fugly as an AUG i suppose. :D

But do you really want to put $1,300 worth of sights an airsoft rifle?

Just like every other RS device, there's a cheaper airsoft equivalent. $60-100 for the sight, €50-70 for the magnifier with the spring mount. Job done, look complete, money saved.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,647 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

My error. Surely the cheaper versions lose some functionality though, no? I mean, a magnifier is a magnifier, be they mounted on a real firearm or not.

Optics are poor quality, the holo/reflex sights arn't clear, the build quality is much lower and if they were put on a real firearm they would desentigrate with the recoil of firing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

They build quality isn't as robust and the materials are cheaper. More than sufficient for recoilless, low abuse devices like airsoft rifles.

    Fair points. Ta.
