The Saga Continues...

Right folks, mind is made up now... I'm going for a Planet X frame (colour will be kept a surprise until the first day I rock up on it to a spin), and it will have a full SRAM Rival Groupset -it's the best price/performance/weight option out there at the moment.

Now my only question is with pedals! I'm being a bit of a contrary sort, and so want something slightly out of the norm, so it's goodbye to SPD-SL, but what to go for? I loike the idea of Speedplay Zeros, but Crank Bros and Look are both floating around in my brain... what do you suggest I go for? (I'm guessing you'll all say the speedplay ones cos they come in pink :p )

-quick edit, when it comes to justification, float is *not* important -as I don't need or want any (I just prefer being securely attached rather than having a bit of wiggle room)

so want something slightly out of the norm

Then don't buy look -- Speedplay or the Crank brothers are out of the norm. Look is the Norm. SPD-SL is the bulk buy deal from tesco

Look carbon Zeo's with black cleats (0 degrees float). They'll go well with either black, powder blue or (please God no) pink.

Crank bros egg beaters just look daft and speedplay , well aesthetically they are a bit bland.

Speedplay are proper road pedals. Crank Bros are like SPDs, they are used by mountain bikers who want to maintain the same pedals on their road and mountain bike. I wouldn't see any point in using them on a road bike unless you wanted to standardise on one pedal system with a recessed cleat.

To be honest if you are happy with the SPD-SLs why not keep them, otherwise there is benefit to having a standard system like Look in terms of being able to try out friends bikes, etc. etc.

To be perfectly honest rather than spending a fortune on new pedals why not use your current ones and spend more on the bike, you could probably get Force for the sake of re-using your current SPD-SLs. :)

Crank bros also seem quite heavy for what they are (speedplay are significantly lighter).

In terms of a standard to try out people's bikes, there's such a mix even on here, that it's a bit of a moot point -there's folks on looks (like El Tonto), SPD's (You, Emty etc), SPD-SL (me, niceonetom, Caroline_ie) etc etc that it wouldn't matter too much what I have!

I'm liking the low stack height and cornering height of the speedplays, and the fact that once clipped in they almost disappear, but wonder about how much the cleats on the shoes could crud up...

I have them to (grey cleats though), but as I said Zeos are oo popular for a man wanting so thing different.

I was looking for new pedals recently, and considered Speedplays too. Opted for Time RXS in the end, very happy so far. Bit of a comparison here

I have Keos on my bike, but recently have been suffering from the wandering eye too....was considering speedplay too, but after much reading I've come to the opinion that they're not so hot ....my reasoning...1) when you take into account the plates as well they aren't any lighter than a normal system 2) I don't think the stack height is great as there is an adaptor plate between the plate and the shoe (speedplay plate is 4 hole) 3) speedplay plates are v.expensive although I know they don't have to be replaced as often 4) Robfowl is right...they do look a little crap!! Don't know too much about Time RXSs etc but had Time sports (lower end of the range) many moons ago, couldn't fault them....actually they were v.expensive £70 in 1993....whats that adjusted for inflation!! :D

If you want to be different, get Time pedals. Friend of mine has them and says they're the most comfortable system he's ever ridden.

I got these to go with my black PX

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Wellgo-Carbon-CR-1-BMX%2FDownhill-Road-Bike-Pedals-Cleats_W0QQitemZ200322162008QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090320?IMSfp=TL0903201410004r26653

God only knows why they are listed as BMX/Downhill pedals, they use the Look Delta style cleat, of which you get a set of wellgo's version

Actually Tiny....now that I think of it I still have them old time sports on my old racer in the shed.....:D

Tempted by the times myself....I'm just not convinced on their skeletal look (severe nitpicking considering they're under my shoe) and the fact that they won't look so hot when all the nice red and white paintwork gets scratched!!

+1 actually, the great price of them (65 quid odd) moves em toward the top of my list, but the T-mobile ones could also look good on any colour bike :)

Which means Tiny can buy them. I've got the feeling he wants to be the only dude with the pedals he chooses.

So far I've used Look Keo Easy, Sprints and Carbon. I've also used 3 different shimano spd pedals.

Of the Keos, the carbon ones are nicest to use. There's a very satisfying engaging click, more so than Sprint or Easy pedals. I've used the Sprints for longest and they are a good pedal and have lasted me well. I only used the Easy pedals on a recent spin. They were fine and caused no issues. I've had the Carbon pedals for a few months now and they are very comfortable and I'm happy with them.

I used SPDs for a while on my road bikes but I much prefer the Keos for comfort on longer rides. I still use SPDs for commuting.

For some reason I'm eager to give the Speedplays a go, but since I've got Keos on two bikes, I may not get around to it for a while.

So, if I were you and I was looking for something new, I'd give Speedplay a shot.

I paid EUR57 including shipping from Wiggle for a set of RXS Edge.

One thing that put me off Speedplays, apart from price, is that they seemed higher maintenance than any other system-not a huge deal, they just need regular lubrication. They are also the least walkable-on, for those espresso stops :)

I have 2 kinds of Crank Brothers pedals, If you're looking for zero float you can rule out crank brothers. The egg-beater design has intrinsic float.

Going from SPD-SLs to crank brothers would probably be a noticable drop in engagement and performance for you because as Blorg says they are more like SPDs.

The others seem to be givin you good pointers here, I look forward to seeing the final machine.

Why worry about the pedals? You really only see them when you're off the bike. I think you should spend the money on a nice pair of these.

These remind me of the shoes a mate had when I started cycling. They were brown lace up with wooden soles and you had to nail in the cleats

It's the dimples. And it's the commentators such as David Harmon and Anthony McCrossan raving about them as well. "Look at him, he's flying along on those Zipp wheels" as if all of a sudden, one brand of wheels turns you into Roger Ramjet or something.

I think they look nice but my experience of laced shoes is that you can't clamp them tight enough to get a really circular pedalling motion, your foot will move around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭Vélo

Well the RXS Carbon and the RXS have adjustable float, the RXE don't but I think they've been discontinued anyway. To be honest I've found the factory float setting (maximum) to be fine my me, but I'd imagine others would desire less float, in which case it's simply adjusted with an allen key. Cleats have fore-aft and angular adjustment which is nice, and they are seriously hard wearing, much more so than Look.

The RXS Carbon are a few grams lighter and look awesome too :D.

No-one should buy those Dromarti shoes.
