Hey all, quick question. We know that Richard + Crew are still on the Island correct? (Through Locke getting the compass etc) But they seem to have fallen completely out of focus. I'd love to know people's theories on their path or whether or not people think they're just waiting for Locke to get back

Well, with Locke and the survivors of Arija 316 in present time, I think Locke will probably start trying to find them soon. They're probably still at the Temple or whatever

It really depends on what has happened in the 3 years that have past. We've seen nothing of this up to now.

Just something that crossed my mind just now - remember when we saw Richard meet young Ben before for the first time how he was all scruffy, had the long hair etc? And yet when he talks with Sawyer about the truce, which we now know is the era where young Ben exists, he doesn't have the scruffy ragged appearance at all. He has short hair and is clean shaven.

Any ideas as to why this is? Was the Richard Ben met originally from a different time? Or is the 1977 Richard a time traveller?

the others have used makeup and costume to appear scruffy before maybe thats all Richard was doing that time he met ben

It's the 1974 Richard who was scruffy - Ben tells sayid in "He's Our You" That he met Richard 3 years earlier, 1974. Sawyer met him in 1977. It's weird that Richard is clean cut in the 50s when they had to bury Jarhead, and be scruffy for the time he meets Ben - but I think it's obviously to do with Hostiles/Others habit of dressing shabbily on their little missions.

This habit hasn't really been explained, though your own logic could fill the gaps. I just presume it's to stop people like the Losties when they crashed from thinking "Wait a second who are these guys with the normal clothes coming from?".

I'm still confused though. Sawyer, Juliet, Jin and Miles were stuck in 1974 after the flashes right? Now Sawyer talks with Richard in this period and Richard has short hair and is clean shaven.

Now in the recent episode - which is set three years later in 1977 - Ben tells Sayid that he spoke to Richard three years ago, which is the same year Richard spoke to Sawyer when they had to deal with the truce issue.

So essentially Richard has appeared to both Ben and Sawyer in two vastly different ways. Is this some sort of blooper? Is this actually quite significant? Or have I got my dates mixed up? :pac:

I've never really been able to make sense of the Others' dirty barefoot look. I mean, the present day Others used it as a disguise. But they continued to use it even after the Losties learned that it was a disguise. Sometimes they wore it, sometimes they didn't. It's the same in the past.

Actually I think Ben's first encounter with Richard happened in 1973 (4 years before 77). So Richard goes from clean-cut (1950s) to primitive (1973) to clean-cut again (1974). Also the Hostiles who attack Amy in '74 are in primitive dress, the same time that Richard is in clean-cut civilian dress.

So obviously it's some sort of disguise or uniform and always was. As for why they sometimes wear it and sometimes don't, I've no idea. I don't think it's a mistake though.

Yeah it's a bit confusing at the moment, but I thought that in the 70's at least they were wearing their rags coz they were living in the jungle or the temple so no need for proper clothes.

in the 50's and post-Dharma wipeout they had control of the island so could wear proper clothes then. I think they use the rags to fool the losties and also simply coz they might be easier to wear when traipsing around the jungle!

Go to Lostpedia and search Richard and get a timeline on his personal events so far, it should help clear your mind - or confuse it more.:D
