Cargo plane crashes in Tokyo

A cargo plane has crash-landed and burst into flames near Tokyo.
The accident happened as the plane landed at Narita international airport from Guangzhou in China.
Japan's NHK public broadcaster showed a dramatic footage of the plane landing, bouncing and then bursting into flames on Monday morning local time.
A pilot and co-pilot were reportedly aboard the Federal Express jet, but there is no news on their condition or any other casualties.
Firefighters rushed to the scene of the crash.
One runway at Narita was closed after the accident.

    Video [actual footage] here:

Can't see the pilots getting out of that one I'm afraid.

Wind to blame? Or just to fast?
Looks like front gear failure and bad weight distribution to me.

Just watching Fox News here Chicago.

They're reporting that the all American Crew were killed in the Tokyo incident.

They are also reporting on another DC 12 aircraft crash in Butte, Montana USA saying that 17 children / teenagers killed coming back from a school skying trip.

How come so many DC-10 / MD-11 crashes end up with the fuselage upside-down? The link from the Aer Lingus DC-10 thread on the crashes for this plane shows that quite a few seem to flip over during takeoff / landing accidents - you rarely see this with other types.

I always wondered the same! Must be the weight of the engine up top that once it starts leaning over to one side the momentum brings it all the way over.

Not to be cynical or anything as this was a horrific crash, as was the other crash today, but how long did it take them to figure that one out? I mean they hardly expected it to be flown by remote control or something!

I can see where you are coming from, but I guess they said that to emphasise to non-aviation people that there only two on board.

The wording is pedantic in fairness.

Looks like a heavy landing, bounce, then on second impact, nosewheel first (possibly forward elevator by pilot), third impact the tail/left gear collapses, plane explodes...
    Not pretty.

Good point. They all appear to lose a wing during the impact too, which would make it easier to roll over. It seems a bit chicken-and-egg - either the tail engine momentum causes the wing to snap (not good), or the wing is always sheared on impact and the engine just completes the fuselage roll. I wouldn't fancy being a pilot in that anyway, RIP.

I always thought the DC-10 was unfairly maligned (a good design let down by poor maintenance practices), but my opinion might be changing now...

On some cargo flights you might have other crew in the jump seat or crew area as well, to fly the return or just to get to a destination to begin another route.
