I've taken my old car "off the road" due to the recession and its just sitting untaxed and un-insured in the front garden. Should I take the number plates off it ? Is there anything I'm legally required to do ? Its broken down and I can't afford to get it repaired and nobody wants to buy it.

Do you want to scrap it, or just leave it in your garden for now?

No you do not need to tell the Gardai if the car is off the road.

See if your local fire brigade need practice cutting up cars. They might take it off you.

    This too shall pass.

AFAIK scrappies must take it from you for nowt!
However, you could put it up on adverts.ie - maybe someone will relieve you of her! What type of car is it?

No I think it is the opposite. Something to do with environmental issues or something a car has to be disposed of properly and this costs money. Not sure how much though. If you know someone who is a car breaker, they might take it off you for nothing and sell the parts but otherwise you are paying!
We had a car like this and we gave it to a guy who wanted a field car for his son. We took the number plates off it and took out the tax discs etc before we gave it to him.
