Grand Slam

Can someone please explain the term "Grand Slam"? I'm a bit confused by it. Apparently Ireland hasn't won it since 1948 but were Italy and France in the competition then? I don't think so. Also Sky are saying the England have won the Calcutta Cup, what do you do to win that? I thought we beat England as well? Is it part of the Grand Slam too?

    Thanks.

The term comes from bridge when you win all 13 tricks in a round.

Basically means winning everything you can - Wasn't called the grand slam the last time we won it - Italy weren't involved then but France were.

the Grand slam is a term used to say we went undefeated.
The Calcutta cup is a cup between England and Scotland only, so England win it most years, of late anyway

4.3kWp South facing PV System. South Dublin

The Calcutta Cup is only between England and Scotland. Goes back centuries, not even one hundred percent sure of the origin myself, think it's just a tradition thing...wikipedia here I come...

Calcutta cup is played between Engerland and Scotland
Triple crown between Ireland, Scotland, Wales & Engerland
Championship between Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy & Engerland
Grand slam is won if a team wins all of their games

    Hope that clarifies

Thanks a lot, that clears things up for me.
I must say I'm a bit surprised that anyone in this forum is in a fit condition to type this morning. :D

Apparently the Calcutta cup was made in India of melted Rupees. The been were talking history before the match...so I switched over, it was rugby I wanted!
