[Req] B&W DVDs with Brilliant Extras

    Hi All,

I have recently looked at the below James Cagney Signature Series box set. The extras were simply brilliant and I found them in fact to be better than the films themselves. They include a Warner Night At The Movies introduction, a documentary about each film and an option for film commentary by a film historian. Then in keeping with the 1930s/1940s cinema experience they have a cartoon, a newsreel, a number of trailers and a short film.

I have since tried to expand my DVD collection of B&W films, however without great extra’s I find that I don’t enjoy them. I am now looking to expand my collection based solely on the quality of the extras and not necessarily on the film itself. If anyone has any recommendations, I’m all ears.

Thanks In Advance for all responses.

the Citron collection DVD for the Passion of Joan of Arc is a really great dvd. It's sadly only region 1 but if that isn't an issue its well worth looking on amazon.com for it. Its a black and white silent french film from the 1920's and there's alot of history behind the film and there is a great documentary on the dvd about cinema in france around this period, about some of the creative things filmmakers did to get some cool effects before there were computers to do it for them, information about the film and how it was lost for so many years and cool doc about the score written in the 80's for it. Love, love, love the film.

Obvious ones probably, but 'Casablanca' & 'Citizen Kane' special editions are both excellent. Great quality transfers and tons of extras.

Yeah the Cagney signature collection is class alright.

I'd say look out for more classic warner films as they tend to have good extras. I got Little caesar the other day and it has similiar stuff to the cagney collection on it....plus if you like the Public enemy you'll like Little Caesar.

Scarface is another classic Ganster film with good extras IIRC and as PH said above Casablance and Citizen Kane have great extra's on them.

Another one I picked up recently thats worth it for the extras alone is singin in the rain.....ok its not B&W and its a little different to the films mentioned above but its a quality film and the DVD is worthy of it.

EDIT: The third man also has some good extras on there.

The original Howard Hawks The Thing From Another World. Great two disc set on the market featuring a colourised version that's actualy quite good! Also a John Carpenter commentary that could have wound up being a gushing fan track but instead is quite informative.
