I will have my first ‘Open book’ exam. This is maybe a dumb question, but I've no one else to ask outside term time. Question: are books usually provided (the cost of this one is well over 100 euro)? Otherwise if you take your own, are you allowed to have written on the book? To what extent? Mine is already full of exotic colouring and doodles ! Subject is law.

Was talking to a friend of mine who is taking the law schols. Their first exam was open book too. AFAIK you can bring in any book or notes that you want. If you dont have a book, you could probably take it out of the library. I doubt they'd provide everyone with a copy of a book, especially since you can bring in any book.

According to my friend, you are much better off making your own notes from the book and using them. He was saying you could spend most of the exam leafing through books, and run out of time.
The books are there so you dont have to rember all your quotes from cases etc. So you should be able to answer the question pretty well and just refer to notes and books for any qoutes that you need.
Apparently theres no limit on how many books or notes you bring. Its as many as you can carry.

For the con exams, I believe copies of the constitution are provided. They certainly were in the schols exam the other day.

Thanks.. in this exam, just one book is allowed... the lecturer's (the lecturer just might have access to a stock of books !).
I suppose there is no question of bringing in notes. But can the book be highlighted, and what might be written on the book ?

Yogi - I assume this is an exam set by Oran Doyle, yes?

yes bang on.. any idea ? I'm afraid to scribble all over the book in case I might have to buy a new one. Also in my book, the whole of the last chapter is missing (it seems to be a chapter on closing thoughts ) ! It is replaced with the table of contents, dedications etc. (bought it at Hodges Figgis !)

Is it Constitutional Law or Jurisprudence that you are being examined in Yogi? I believe that for constitutional you are allowed bring in anything-incidentally, if you are doing Constitutional, that would make you in my class! :D

In both of the Con 1 exams I sat set by Oran Doyle, we were allowed to bring in anything. Books, notes, notes in books, books of notes, cats, fried eggs. Whatever. I wouldn't worry, unless he's told you something specific otherwise.

If you can, take a book from the library and bring it in, but don't worry about it too much. No one reads from the book in the exam, it's like an emergency back up only. TAKE GOOD NOTES is the only advice I can give you, and use them in the exam.

Obviously you also need a copy of the Constitution. I think they might provide them in the exam, but they only cost a couple of euro so it wouldn't hurt to bring your own anyway just in case.

Oh and in the exam keep any drink you have well away from the notes!
