Recommend me a 10 speed chain

    My current chain is coming to the end of its life so thinking about my next investment. I was going to get one of those chains with removable links which make it easy to take off and on however I now believe that the removable links cannot be reused on 10 speed chains. Is that right? I take they are still less bother than the standard Shimano chains with their need for a chain tool?

    Any recommendations for chains up to £35? Needless to say I don't want something that is fragile though I can't imagine anybody else wants that either :D

    The chain is for use with a Ultegra and Dura-Ace cassettes (swap wheels round quite a lot).

    I like the KMC chains, real smooth, link are easy to use, never had one break on me.

    if your chain is coming to an end, so is your cassette. so change them both.

    even if you get a chain with a quicklink a chain tool is still required to shorten the chain accordingly.

    This is true ... if you are changing because you caught the chain before it is fully worn ... you can get away with just replacing the chain ... but if its skipping .. you might need cassette + chain.

    CRC do 3 pack on chains ... which work out more reasonable than buying them individually. Also ... if you keep swapping between the 3 chains every 1000 miles ... you can get a lot more out of your cassette as well.

    SRAM powerlocks for 10 speed are 1 use only but do make putting the chain on and taking it of easier ... KMC ones are reusable ... quick links also take the guess work out of whether you did the job right or not .. if I joined a chain without a powerlink, I would always be worried about it breaking because I haven't done it right ... not a good feeling when you are standing up trying to power up a climb ...

    If you buy from your lbs ... they might be willing to cut the chain to size for you ... but a chain tool is handy to have ... especially something to carry in your saddle bag .. having said that, I don't have 1 today .. but am looking for something half decent with a mutitool in case something happens on a spin.

    Too much wasted information there ....
    KMC ... very good ... but look a tad expensive
    SRAM & Shimano ... CRC do 3 packs ... SRAMs come with powerlink included .. with Shimano you get their version of the pin ... but I still get the powerlocks separately.

    Is that how it works? I thought if it's well looked after you should go through 2 chains per cassette... I can't remember where I got that from

    if you are only catching chain wear when it starts skipping ... it probably means that both chain and cassette are gone ..

    but if you catch it during regular check and the chain is just beginning to wear .. you can get away with just replacing the chain ..

    Thanks everyone.

    The cassettes arent' an issue as I say I swap wheels about all the time (3 sets) and no skipping on any chains. When cleaning my chain I occasionally check for chain wear with my park tool and it showing the chain is getting to the limit of its stretch so I'm just looking ahead to see what chain to get and then hunt for bargains over the next month or so that might arise.

    I've seen good things about those KMC X10 chains so if I find a bargain over the next month or so will probably plump for them.
