    Hi,
does anyone know of any good guides to putting slates on a roof? I have a new garage and wouldn't mind having a go at putting slates on as a DIY project. Once I get going I reckon I would be grand, its just starting off I wouldn't know what the correct steps would be.

    thanks
    Paul

Duno if you have it battened yet but your first row of battens should be at 9 inches from facia then 2nd row up 3 inches from this or 12 inches from top of facia then measure to top of rafter to this 2nd batten thats 12 inches up from facial and get it as close to 250mm as possible. when you start slating your first slate will be turned horizontally and will then lean over facial by about 3 inches all of your 2nd row of slates have to be cut down to top of the two holes on the slate which is about 12 inches these are then fixed on top of the first row so that they too are over lapping facia by 3 inches obviously half lapped on first row. then 3rd row should go on too they will over lap facia by 3 inches and be nailed on top of 2nd row obviously half lapped on 2nd row the top of this 3rd row of slates should now be roughly in the middle of you third batten and then continue your slates up keeping slates in middle of all battens and half lapping them hope this helps and you can half understand it..
