    Hi,
been tryin to set up both these games,Ikari warriors and cabal, using a usb joypad(has 2 analogue sticks) but just cant sus out a config that works. Its doin me head in:mad:!

If i remember rightly Ikari warriors had a single stick joypad but you could also twist it if you know what i mean, you could be going forward but firing behind you.

I cant remember how cabal was set up in the arcade(1988-christ i feel old)

    thanks in advance

    Hi Lab Mouse,

The kind of joystick that was used to to play Ikari Warriors was called a "Rotary Joystick". In an arcade cab it had an extra cable that was attached to the game board, in the same way a kick harness is attached to a Street Fighter board.

In MAME the twist is emulated, but it has to be asigned to two separate keys, one for clockwise and one for counter clockwise. So, even if your USB pad has a rotary joystick, it might not work with MAME.

I tried to hook up a rotary joystick to a MAME cab, the only viable method I found was via a rotary interface. I have not got a chip programmer, so I could not not make one of those interfaces.

I hope this is of some help in explaining why it won't work the same as it did in the arcade.

As regards Cabal, it should work just fine, I don't recall it being a rotary joystick game. I have been informed that it could be played with a trackball instead of a standard 8 way joystick.

    Regards,

    phillo

(P.S. - If anybody out there has a chip programmer that will suit the Atmel ATTINY2313 and is willing to program a chip or two for me, please PM me. The file can be found here http://rototron.info/RI.aspx)

    thanks Phillo..
just thought I might of been able to get the 2nd analogue stick to chosse the direction to fire in... but then again its emulated properly:)

as for cabal i think i just need to mess about with the settings and get it to workm somehow

...but dammit i want to play Ikari warriors!!!!!

I know how frustrating it can be. I tried playing Midnight Resistence (another Rotary Joystick game) with two buttons assigned to clockwise and counter clockwise and it's just not the same as using a rotary joystick.

You could use the left and right trigger buttons on the USB pad, that might work a little better.
