Probably not the answer you want to hear but your GP is the person to advise you on what professional is best to see - different sex therapists may be more experienced in different areas so to find the best to address your specific problem speak to your GP and get a referral.

Hi OP I was in a similar situation to yourself a few years ago when I realised that I might have vaginismus. I actually went to the Well Woman Centre on Pembroke road originally to see the GP there and she told me about the sexual therapist there in the Centre. I went to this therapist for only a few sessions, probably should have gone for more but the important thing was it was catalyst for full pain free happy sex life. I don't know if that particular therapist is still there but I think they still carry out counselling for vaginismus - just checked their website www.wellwomancentre.ie
Keep the faith you'll get there. All the best.

hi there, i experienced this same problem a few years back, went to the well woman clinic who gave me the name of a doctor on baggot st (i think) who diagnosed what the problem was (i.e. vagiismus) and her counseling helped a little bit, but not a lot to be honest. So i stopped going to see her.
The strange thing is, that the vaginismus seemed to just 'go away' in time. I'm not sure what changed in my head but i just stopped being so stressed about the whole thing and it pretty much went away. I dont mean to belittle it ,i'm just being honest, it just stopped and things were 'normal' ever since. so things just seemed to sort themselves out. I hope ive helped somewhat, things will be ok.

I think I have this too, but I'm not too sure how to go about getting it treated; it's not something I even knew there was a name for until recently.

As you can understand it's very frustrating / upsetting for both me and my boyfriend.
For me I think it stemmed from the fact that I was getting lots and lots of kidney and uti's after having sex, that I kind of feared having sex and it make me anxious about sex and now my vagina kinda reflexes so that it's almost impossible to have sex. It's even difficult and sore to insert a tampon!

My Wife had this for 11 years..
We went to counselling and bingo, after about 3 or 4 months. It disappeared. Our only regret was waiting so long.."It'll sort itself out"..It didn't
Please go to a councellor as soon as possible as the longer it goes on the strain on the relationship increases also..

Sorry OP but I dont understand how a GP telling you that you need to see a specialist is dismissing you? IMO thats actually dealing with the problem correctly, GPs only deal with general problems, anything specialised is beyond their capabilities.

Did you ask for a referral letter to see a gynaecologist?

If you're in Dublin could you recommend a counsellor, I've suffered with this for the last 4 years. I'm seeing someone who deals in cognitive behaviour therapy however I'm not really making any progress.

Gynaecological physical therapy often works for women with primary vaginismum where counselling is completely ineffective. There is a yahoo support group with hundreds and hundreds of women with this condition who can further advise.
