Would like to hear from anyone who has had a service (Hyundai preferably) carried out at Des Darcy in Swords.

I am getting a Santa Fe serviced there next week, and I have no experience with them and so am not sure what their standards, charges, etc are like.

Agree a price before bringing the car there - dealers are quite prepared to haggle on service charges these days.

I've got a quote of 300 for a full service

Ring them back and bargain them down. I'm having my Forester serviced on Monday - I rang Carroll & Roche who quoted €400, Castle Subaru in Bray quoted €250, a Subaru dealer in Newry said they'd do it for STG£140. I rang Castle back and agreed a figure of €200 including a replacement car.

Get it serviced in Newry. I know a few people who've done it recently

Yeah, but Newry's a pain in the @rse for me. Better for me to use NI prices as a stick to beat a local dealer down to a comparable price with, and still have the convenience of a local garage.

Where in Newry would you recommend as I have some sterling to hand. I need a timing belt done on mine as NCT is fast approaching. HB Dennis looked after it in the past (no problems, happy enough), but don't fancy a major job at franchised dealer rates.

What car do you have? I just looked on the Subaru.co.uk website and picked the most convenient dealer between me and Ikea.:)

    Legacy 2.0 Petrol with 88Km.

The two I found were Donnolly Bros http://www.donnellygroup.co.uk/servicing.asp and Desmond Eastwood http://www.eastwoodmotors.com/service.asp. Neither is actually in Newry, they're both around Belfast. I can't remember which I called :o but whichever it was, they were very friendly on the phone. Maybe give both a call, see what they say?

:D That's very mean, tut tut.

(Runs for pen and paper to write that trick down)

Ah right, I was thinking it was Belfast, not Newry. Donnelly Bros's are 6 miles from Ikea, so probably the easiest to get to. They would be one of the more experienced dealers in Ireland working on Subaru's too. Although hopefully not so big that customer service suffers.

    Not all of em!! :(

I rang this morning to get my Passat serviced and she's also due a timing belt and brake fluid change as well as the usual standard items.

Place I bought it wanted just under €1100 for this!
Second place I rang wanted €980
Third place wanted €840 including the above and pollen filter + rental of a car for the day.

All 3 are main VW dealers in the greater Dublin and immediately surrounding counties areas.

I duly rang back the first place to ask if they'd price match and I was given a flat "no" - so I told her she can go ahead and cancel the booking and I'll take option 3 please!

    Definitely shop around!

Option 3 is still pricey.Did you not consider a main VW Dealer in NI?

Just did... for a full service, timing belt, and brake fluid change it works out as £615 (or €654 according to XE.com) - better again!! :)

That's a hell of a difference in price between two Dublin franchised dealers. Makes you wonder what's going in...

I'd be very interested to know how you get in with Castle - I used Carroll & Roche the last time but, like you say, they were pricey.

That was the 3rd quote I got for €840. :) Was gonna go with it but when I got the quote from the dealer in Enniskillen, the OH decided it'd be a good opportunity for a shopping trip with the difference! :p

What's covered under a 'full service'?

My interpretation would be whatever's due on that car at that mileage, ie a full 45k km service on my car will include among other things changing the oil in the 3 diffs, whereas a full 15k km service will be just an engine oil, filter, and a series of checks.

But a customers interpretation and the dealers interpretation of a 'full service' aren't always aligned

I used Carroll & Roche as well - was happy with the service & it's very convenient for me but I thought the price was a bit sticky (€300 for <15000km service).

Bray would be a pain in the arse for me but I keep hearing good things about Castle Subaru...

OK, time for a positive dealer story. Got the Forester serviced by Castle yesterday, dropped it in in the morning, left in a courtesy car. Arrived back to the car washed, ready to go, and a bill for ... €190.92. Now that's a first!:)

Think I'll check them out next time so - no harm to support a dealer who's making an effort
