    Hi all,

I'm looking at booking flights to San Francisco return with United Airlines.
They are part of the star alliance so the (single) booking would be Dublin - London Heathrow - San Francisco and the reverse on the way home.

As United have a baggage allowance of 46kg (2x23kg) and BMI only have a limit of 20kg on short haul routes, I was wondering if it is possible to check the baggage through to Dublin from SF on the way home and avoid charges etc?

I was able to do this a couple of years ago, flying from Baltimore to Dublin via Heathrow with BA and Aer Lingus but I was wondering if this is still possible with tightened security.

    Thanks in advance,

    P.

Mods, if this would be better in aviation forum feel free to move. P

Generally, BMI will honour the more generous allowances of their Transatlantic partners at no cost. If you check their website there may be more details.

There were certainly no worries a couple of years ago when I flew with BMI and Air Canada, with regard to baggage.

On the way out bmi will only check through to United it if both journeys are part of the same reservation (on one reservation, you're generally entitled to the larger allowance). If you have a seperate bmi and United booking, you're stuck with the bmi allowance (unless you want to pay extra on the bmi leg of your journey to London).

On the way back United will probably check through to bmi without a problem.
