Does anybody know how much I can expect to get fined for not having a tv license? I got a summons the other day. Will I get fined the full amount(634) or will it depend on the judge on the day. I genuinly forgot all about it!

I was looking earlier for an answer to see what the judges are currently giving out as fines, but it doesn't appear to be TV licence week in the courts.

If I were you, I'd hope you are not first up, as it would give you a chance to see what he is doing.

BTW, this isn't legal advice, contact your solicitor.

In a recent case (not in Ireland) a woman got off scott free as the judge deemed tv "an essential", and threw out the case.
This would be a very worrying development for the likes of RTE (wasters that they are, where's our HDTV/DABS etc? all of which they automatically got the contract for)

Is TV essential? If you can afford a Cable/Sat connection you can afford a License. Perhaps you should buy a TV license before you go to court it might look better.

IBI (Independent Broadcasters of Ireland) don't seem to interested in providing DAB. And BOXER has been giving the license for DTT which I am sure includes some HDTV.

RTÉ own RTÉNL which we own so why shouldn't they be given the license. It is partly why we pay a TV license.

RTÉ cannot be blamed for the slowness of ComReg and the BCI.

No judge would do that here, of all of the laws we have here, the one on TV licensing is tighter than a ducks arse in water.

Elmo is right, RTÉ have been progressive, slower than the UK, for sure, but its the regulators and "vested interests" who slow things down.

And we are still waiting for the Broadcasting Bill 2008 to be passed. Hardly RTÉ's fault.

If I remember correctly it was in Wales but certainly in the UK.

Yeah, the Judge deemed TV an essential service in this day and age for news etc.

    1. you don't have to have cable/sat to have a tv but it'd be a bit pointless without it.
    2. I have a tv licence it was someone else in an earlier post that mentioned it.
