Yes - no problem - with any HD capable Free-to-air box - eg Combo receivers for DTT/Satellite such as Clarke-Tech, MVision, Technomate etc. Also possible to get Free-to-air Satellite-only box such as Freesat HD. Loads of info on Satellite & Terrestrial boards.

I am receiving HD on Clarke-Tech Combo box. I get all Irish & main UK channels free to air, including BBC HD.

A non HD box has nowhere to output it.

Also HD only transponders use DVB-S2 rather than the older DVB-S, so most non-HD boxes can't even tune it.
DVB-S HD channels (non-DVBS2) will "tune" on a non-HD satellite receiver, but you can't watch or listen.

As well as HD capable boxes, you can get several brands of TV with built-in freesat and freeview receivers which have mpeg-4 decoders that are required to decode HD.

I have a Panasonic plasma with such a receiver and watched the stunning BBC Yellowstone (winter) program in HD last night.

cnocbui, pardon my ignorance, but are you saying I can plug the cable coming from the sky disk direct to TV if the TV is capable of tuning and decoding it?

How do I find out if my TV can do it? Its a LG427000, and I've a normal coax from rooftop antenna plugged into it and it shows four blank channels as "HD Service' - RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and something else.

PS: Googled a lot and I don't think LG427000 has freeview..! I wonder if I can find a TV tuner card that can do HD from the sky dish? That would save me from having another box under the tv..!!

At the moment, only Panasonic have freesat enabled tv's available to buy. LG will be launching their range soon.

Take a look at the column on the right of this website to see the current complete range of freesat receivers including the panasonic tv's:

The following are links to the LG products:

    Hope that helps.

The receivers mentioned above can get both standard definition and HD channels but are there any that can get just HD? We have a normal sky box so we already have the other channels.

there are only a few hd channels available at the moment.

why would you want another box for just hd channels?

the tv i mentioned above have both digital terrestrial tv and satellite (hd capable) tuners.

1 from Aeriel and 1 from satellite dish.

I thought they would be cheaper if they just did HD instead of both SD snd HD. I didnt realise they were so expensive. Are they all €150+ or are there any cheaper models?
