I had a similar problem with my Steyr SSG, for me it turned out that the cyclinder of the slide (the cyclinder surrounding the spring) had a bit on the inside which was bent inwards (looked sort of like it was hit with a dot punch) which wouldn''t allow the spring to slide back to catch on the trigger. I had to file down the inside a bit to make it wide enough and now it works perfectly.

Here's a take down guide for the L96.

It should help you strip it down and perhaps see where the problem is

Well i took it apart pretty much everywhere i did but i found one thing i thought was abnormal about it...... in the trigger box if u take it out and look on top theres this metal thing popping out that moves back and forth and i took it apart a while ago and i think i messed it up....could that be the problem?
