Ok I am willing to jinx out currently glorious weather by going out and buying a pair of sunglasses for golf.

Anyone got any recommendations, things to look for?

    oakleys:cool:

    many styles to choose from

have to say like the flak jackets, but you should be able to pick up the half jackets at a reasonable price since the flak jackets are basically just a newer version of same

Do those high contrast lenses make any difference at all?

i got a pair of the duval oakleys based on the advise of some posters here and have to say they work well
good in all weather conditions - it rained there last time i was out but i kept them on, really good to help read greens
go to oakley.com and search for "duval"
    250 quid but worth it
i was trying to get a pair of putting glasses - some pros wear them, they have a grid etched into the glass that helps you read the flow of the putt
my uncle swears by his pair

Hmm ... does this not constitute using an artificial device (or using ordinary equipment in an unusual way) thereby assisting the player by guaging factors which affect his stroke, contrary to rule 14-3? Sounds like it to me.

    possibly
but a 26 handicapper needs all the help he can get
and my uncle is almost 60 so an advantage here and there is useful - particularly now that he is club captain and expectations will be high for the year

I can think of a 101 other things that would help a 26 handicapper rather than a pair of sunglasses with lines ow whatever on them.

Surely such glasses may make a slight difference, one which may help a tour pro knock 1 putt off his total per week or so, but for a 26 handicapper... that means bugger all.

Do you realise what you've just said here?

i have to take you up on that graeme
the average high handicapper looses a load of shots when within 100 yards of the green
chipping in and putting in particular
i almost never three-putt and i reckon on at least 60% of putts sink it in one
much of this is down to my ability to read a green and i think the glasses help me
i hear what ur saying but if i didn't concentrate my efforts on the 100 yard radius of the green i reckon i'd have given up golf by now
typically i'll just hit a 6/7 iron off the tee to keep it sensible and keep me in the hunt

Myksyk pointed out that by using those specs anyone who uses could be in breach of Rule 14-3. Whether the use of said specs breaks this rule or not, your apparent willingness to ignore a possible breach of the game's rules "because a high handicapper needs all the help he can get" shows the lack of respect you have for the game and your fellow players.

What did you buy the driver for then if you typically hit a 6/7 iron off the tee.

Also if you sink 60% of your puts in one and almost never 3 putt then you have a putting average of 25-26 per round which is a better putts per round average than the SSP Chowrasia, who had the least putts per round on average over the whole european tour season last year.

Its not a great example for a captain to be setting for club members and young members if he is using the Glasses while golfing. Even if it is only in social/practice rounds its still a poor example.

I've been getting a Funny smell round here for the last while.....Any one else get it? It could be BO but I think its BS!

i'll look into that rule, wasn't aware of it
isn't a visor or a baseball cap a further aid or "artificial devise"??
    lets not go overboard here

Yep, that same smell has ligered here for a while. It's either to get a reaction or the fact that he's about 12 years of age.

    One for the ignore list!

never crossed my mind that i might be bending the rules
theres so much equipment out there these days to assist a golf player cut some shots off his round that i wouldn't know where to start, kinda new to the game
what about those drivers where you can adjust the draw/fade etc
    or rescue clubs
or that stick for taking balls out of the lake

    Good man.

    No. Don't be silly.
    lets not go overboard here

You mean, let's not adhere to the rules of the game?

my uncle had a hip replacement 2 years ago as well
i suppose under the rules he should declare this as well??
some golf rules are a little daft in my opinion

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,677 ✭✭✭staker

didn't realise there were such glasses to aid putting..
i try to abide by all rulings at all times and admit to not knowing a lot of them too, surely they shouldn't be allowed?
is it oakley who make them?
why haven't the manufacturer's been pulled on this if they're seen to be illegal?

Like a lot of aids, they could be used in practice.

    Sound thoroughly ridiculous to me.

i would like to comment but got a warning for calling someone a tit recently.........:D

but i ask you why bother is there not any rules on threads being constantly hi-jacked by jibberish especially when its a repeat offender?

The initial question.... The newish Oakley Flak Jackets withe the G30 lens. I love em. I replaced my Oakley M frames with these because I tired of the single lens format. n Whatever your choice - the G30 lens is very versatile and a joy to look through.

Regarding the rules side conversation (my apologies, I don't have the history here to know the apparent back-story)... Anyway, I recently saw on Bushnell's web site that they are now touting their newest gps device as legal. I was shocked....

The relevant rule 14-3 states that a distance measuring device is permitted by local rule, though there are penalties should they be used where no local rule is in place. It specifically forbids the use of artificial devices which would assist in the measuring of wind or gradient.

Interesting...some of the new devices will accommodate slope - that would seem to violate 14-3 even with local rule. The rules really do need careful study!
