My OH was waiting over 16 weeks for his unemployment assisatnce, he has now been receiving it for about 16 weeks but has still received no back pay.

Is this normal?? Any advice on how he can get it. Thanks

He needs to call his office and ask if he is entitled to it and if he will be getting it

Oh believe me he has done this many, many times, usually in person. All they say is they are dealing with a huge backlog and don't know when they will get around to it.

Hi Rosebush, im not sure if this still applies but the Sw used to send out a letter to the claimant, this letter used to state that they had been awarded "whatever" payment, at "whatever" rate, from a certain date. Did he receive a letter like this, as this should help to ascertain whether he is due a back payment.
    Hope this makes sense.

Even if he doesn't get the backpay he can always appeal.

You only get backpay from the date you signed on in the dole office, i know people who think that because they were not working and just waited until they felt they needed the money, they waited to fill the forms and sign on, they thought that when they sign on they get paid for the months that they waited to sign on...you dont!
something similar happened to me. i was waiting for about 20 weeks. while i waited i found out i could get paid from cwo until my claim was paid to me at the post office. while i got paid from cwo from week 6 waiting until week 20....i was entitled to backpay for the first 6 weeks that i got no money.

if he got paid from cwo while waiting for the claim he wont get backpay, cant get paid twice...unless he waited a week or a few weeks like me....but otherwise he should get it...once your claim is sorted out , and being paid to you at the post office, then they refund any backpay.it will be paid to your bank account if you filled it on the form otherwise by post draft at post office.

Thanks guys, no don't think he got a letter, and he didn't get any money from the CWO. i think he will have to appeal because it certainly hasn't gone in to our bank acc!

When i got my back pay (a few years ago) it was sent out in a cheque to my home address with a break down of how they worked out the amount that was due. It was a while after the payment was awarded that i received the back pay(but definitely not 16 weeks!). My weekly money was being paid into a bank account at the time.
It may be worth your OH's while visiting his local employment exchange/social welfare office again and asking at the desk if they could check on their system to see whether they intend to pay him any back pay so that he may lodge an appeal.

    Best of luck
