Could somebody please explain the island inhabitants in chronological order i.e. the first people on the island where the British soldiers, then x, then y, then the purge?

I really am getting lost with the programme so would appreciate if someone could answer my question.

    1. The original inhabitants (or ancients) who built the statue, wheel, etc. No idea how or when they arrived.

    2. The Hostiles/Others are either descendants of the ancients or arrived on the Black Rock in the 1800s.

    3. In the 1950s the British and American soldiers arrive. The British soldiers under Widmore seem to merge with the Others. The Americans leave the bomb and are killed off.

    4. In the 1970s Dharma arrive. Possibly because of the prior American presence. Ben arrives during this time also.

    5. Circa 1985- 1993 - Widmore is exiled and Ben becomes leader of the Others/Hostiles.

    6. 1992 - Dharma attempts to "purge" the Hostiles only to get purged themselves. Whoever is left gets merged into the Others.

    7. 2001 - Desmond and Juliet arrive.

    8. 2004 - Oceanic 815 crashes.

My theory, as well, is that they were on board the Black Rock but there has been nothing on the show to back up either theory yet.

There were no British soldiers, only American. There is also no evidence to suggest that Widmore was one of those soldiers, rather the implication seems to be that he was on of the Hostiles, there before the arrival of the US army.

Allin, see here for a detailed chronology of events in Lost.

Maybe he wasn't a soldier but he already had a British accent in 1954, as did Ellie (or at least the actress was trying to do one). So he isn't a true original inhabitant like Richard probably is. Unless he came on the Black Rock (which was British) as you suggested. However, Horace seemed ignorant of the Black Rock in 5x08 so I'm not sure if it had arrived at that point.

faradays mother's name is elouise hawking, ergo it makes sense that ellie would refer to her
