Looking for a cheap second car, we have got it down to 2, a 99 golf, 1.6L,(2,000 euro) or a 2001 corsa, 1L,(1750 euro), the car will mainly be used by my wife to drive to and from work, we have a good family car. Any advice re either car would be appreciated

corsa seems a very good price to be honest with so little details. If its just a sh1t bucket for a to b for minimum cost i'd go with that to be honest. Horrible little cars but it all depends on what you want from a car. I reckon come selling time a decent golf will always have an appeal to young guys though. Throw up some more details and you'll get a better response

Golf is 1.6L, has 94,000miles, NCT a month ago, Private sale, the corsa is 1 litre with 58,000 miles, trade car, due NCT in 3 months. My wife neds it for work, so will be doing approx 250 miles+ a week. The kids will travel in the family car, so it s a second car only. My preference is Golf, my wife Corsa.

Golf. The 1.6 is a cracker of an engine. Dad had one in a golf 1.6 mk3 van and it was fairly nippy and it was bullet proof, nothing ever went wrong with it.

Tbh i wouldnt want to be doing 250 or more miles in a 1l corsa on a back road or let alone a motorway week in week out. Noisy and unrefined comes to mind

You can do much better for that money!

A friend of mine got a 01 Corsa off a guy on adverts last weekend for 750 euro ( wanted 1150 ).It had 90k miles up on it, 10 months tax, over a year nct, with a 5 month old battery and runs very well.He had it serviced during the week and the car is in decent condition, only thing is its dog slow, any overtaking is pretty dangerous, besides that its fine.

I think that generation of Golf's are suppose to be unreliable and if it has no nct forget about it.

A mazda 323, honda civic, mitsubishi colt/lancer etc would be my choice.Any Jap yoke of that generation that has been looked after somebit will be more than up to the job.

That 1.6 8v engine is crap, but because it's not chosen too often it tends to be cheaper. Reasonable price for a Golf I'd go for it over the Corsa, but as above I'd look for a Civic or similar instead. It's up to your wife though, but the Corsa will be hopelessly slow.

I'd be on high alert with the Corsa if it is due it's NCT in three months time and it is being sold as a "trade sale". This could indicate some sort of expensive problem with it otherwise it should be NCT'd as part of any sale.

Given that your wife will be doing 250 miles+ in the car I would go for the Golf, bigger, safer, more comfortable and more power if needed for overtaking.

Imo the Corsa is utter rubbish and worst again in 1.0lt form. Buy a Jap car for €2k Nissan Almera 1.4 (NI5) '00, Suzuli Swift 1.0 '01, Toyota Starlet 1.3 '99, Totota Corolla 1.3 '99.
