All Italian and Belgian iPhones are unlocked as far as I know. I got mine in Italy and it's using Meteor's network happily without me having to jailbreak it.

OP, iPhones bought in Ireland with O2 are restricted or "locked" to that Network. If you put a sim card from other networks into it, it will not work.

Unlocked iPhones can be used on any network. A factory unlocked iPhone was unlocked by Apple themselves and can be updated through iTunes. A software unlock (or hack) is available for software version 2.2 called "yellowsn0w". This is almost the same as the Apple factory unlock, but there are restrictions on updating your iPhone through iTunes.

To jailbreak an iPhone, you have to install software which places a package called Cydia or another called Installer onto your iPhone. These are similar to the Apple "App" store which allows you to download applications to your iPhone. One of these is the "yellowsn0w" app mentioned above.

The ideal position to be in is to have the factory unlocked iPhone

Allegedly O2 won't give unlock codes even after the end of the two year contract termination period - wonder if that's true?

They have said as much over on the O2 Forum

Good question. We lock iPhones as they are significantly subsidised by us when purchased. We therefore hope to regain some of this cost during the lifetime of our customers.
