    Hey all,
Was planning on going up to Merlin Auctions on Saturday and wanted to ask your opinions.

Their trade in options looks good but I was just looking are their auction list and there s one hell of a long list of repossions.

I can only assume they would start auction with some limit so you couldnt get a 06 Golf for 3000?

    Anyone ever bought from there?

I would advise you to go a few times first without bidding to get to know how it works.
By the sound of things you are not familiar with these auctions. Basically, most cars will be entered with a reserve figure below which the car will not be sold. The auctioneer will then start the bidding and get it as high as possible given the available bidders in the hall. If the bidding doesnt reach the reserve figure, the car is simply not sold and returned to the owner or auctioned again next week.
When you do get around to bidding, be aware that there are significant costs for a buyer to pay in addition to the auction floor price. work all this out in advance.
You should also take an experienced mechanic or similar with you as there is no such thing as a test drive here.
Finally, you need to be very much on the ball if bidding. Some auctioneers (not saying it happens at merlin) will take fake bids from the back of the hall or from the phone/online bidder to keep you bidding upwards or to get the bidding started. Say for example you were the only bidder left and the car hadnt met reserve and the auctioneer felt that you might pay more for the car, he could take a fake bid from behind you or from the phone/online to make you bid again. if you bid again, he is gaining and if you dont, car still hasnt met reserve so no loss to him. Its an old trick but im sure it still goes on.

Also, the trade in option etc will cost you more than simply entering the car into the auction yourself.
