    Hi,

what do you think, Volvo S40 2.0l petrol, 98 year, manual.

    Price is around 1,5k

Would that be good value, milage is 125k (miles).

I checked the car today (no test drive yet) and it seems to be on fine condition, not new of course but it has some service history (timing belt changed at 100k), new tyres.

NTC ends at 2010 and tax in may.

I drive a Matiz now and I really would like to change from toycar to real car:)

Of course I will take the car to test drive and check it well with my mechanic, but nothing alarming was not found today.

If your mechanic gives it the thumps up then it sounds decent enough. I'd try and knock down the price a little more though or get the seller to tax it for 3 months.

    Hi,

I did a motorcheck for this car,

most of the data is just fine,

    but this one:

This vehicle's road tax is valid for another 10 weeks.

However, we have noticed a previous gap in the taxation dates. This may be explained by a period of non-use where the car was not taxed. However, significant periods of non-use should be investigated further. Further information on road tax rates and renewing online can be found by clicking the following link http://www.motortax.ie.

    ********

Is this something that I should be worried about? There is no other problems in the history expect this one. The car was auctioned at 28-02-2007 in Merlin, but thats about it. No finance, no crashes etc.

I don't think so there is probably a genuine reason why it wasn't taxed ie the car was off the road or not driven. You should only have to worry about the tax from the date you become the registered owner. Just ask they current owner about it anyway for curiosity sake.

The most important thing imo to check on a €1500 car is current condition and to make sure it is in good mechanical shape which you are doing by getting a mechanic to inspect it.

By the way make sure all the electrics work ok as electrics were a weak spot on that model S40.

An 11 year old, 2 litre petrol volvo, and an S40 which is not the best volvo at all.

    Seems expensive to me.

I also think this is overpriced, a 2.0 petrol isn't as desirable in this country as a 1.8 or even a 1.6 (shudder!)
I wouldn't pay over a grand, and at that it'd have to have leather etc.

I got a very similar car for much less than a grand last year.
Treated well it should last a long time.

According to an old auto express i have at home the Volvo s40/v40 was the most reliable non japanese car in Britain between 1996-2003. I have a GDi verson with 115k miles and aside from the dodgy mitsubishi engine which gave trouble at the start it has been flawless. Very well put together, very comfortable and surprisingly rapid. I reckon mine has been chipped though because sub 8.5 seconds to 100kmh does not seem quite right to me. Its supposed to be 10.5! But thats neither here nor there.

The car is very well put together but i also think that is too steep a price for a 1998 version. Mine is a 2001 with 115k miles and i wouldnt be looking for more than €3,000 for it and that is a substantially revised version of the car which made big improvements to the ride and handling of the car. Id say you could do much better than that and try to get a post 2000 model as they are the updated version which is a far superior car.

Be warned: Volvo dealers will rape you if something goes wrong.

I'm picking up a 1998 Volvo s40 SE this weekend as it happens. The one I'm getting has all the bells and whistles, leather seats, heated, seats, all electric windows/sunroof, Air Con, Cruise Control etc and only has 83K on it and is in great condition. I'm getting it for £0 (from a friend as he got himself a different car), which is a nice price :D

my buddy bought a 99 1.9d with 137k last year for a grand. Was an SE model with leather, heated seats, air con and sunroof. Cars touching 170 now-not my cup of tea and didn't think it'd last but it did. Whoever is selling your one knows its a pain to sell. Shop around

Well yes. I've already paid €300 to get it serviced, €130 for a new battery, £120 for a ferry ticket back to UK (living there these days) and £120 odd for insurance so I can drive it over and get the thing MOT'ed. Another £50-60 odd for the MOT and £55 to get it registered, so yes, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Oh and not forgetting £230 on a new kick ass double DIN Pioneer Stereo with blue tooth, MP3, USB, IPOD connections etc.

It should prove to be a very comfortable, safe, and relatively reliable car for the money. I'd just make sure that the car is not a total dog, as many cars that previously went through Merlin Car Auctions have usually ended up there for a reason.

Car is now sold, too bad not to me tough.

I checked the car on Monday, but the seller sold it on Tuesday in work, while I was in holiday.

Fast move but if you get someone with the money, that is it, I did not give any deposit so I dont have any rights to complain.

Now I have to re-think again what to buy:)
