First VAT Return

    Hi Guys

I registered as a sole trader in mid feb and also registered for VAT.
I now have to complete my first VAT return for Jan/Feb.

The story is I didn't actually take in any VAT during this period (i made no sales as i was still in set up)

I did however make purchases for the business (Biz cards, paper advertisements, laptop, printer).

Can I just put in €0 for sales and then make a claim for the VAT I paid on the above purchases?

Or have I got it all wrong?

If your claiming a refund they often ask for copies of the invoices so it will speed things up if you attach copies of the larger invoices your reclaiming the VAT on to the return.

Make sure that all the invoices that you are claiming are dated after you registered for VAT. Otherwise you will find that an audit will disallow those claims.
