Hook :(

    Hey guys:)

Erm.....I have only played 4 rounds in '09 but each have been an utter disappointment:(

My once reliable driver is now killing my soul:eek:

I have a terrible hook....not a pull hook ....just like a 50 yard low hook

It is very consistent and I can't seem to shake it off:mad:

The more to the right i aim the further left it goes:rolleyes:

Any quick tips.....or maybe some youtube video that has stopped your hook?

"I want to be the very best...like no-one ever was....to catch them...."

    Cheers big ears:p

this worked for me. when at the range split your hands on the grip with about 3 inches between each hand and hit 6 irons. just think about hitting it about 80 yards. the fact your hands are apart should help you with your timing which i reckon is causing the snap hook. Move up to a 4 iron then a rescue and then a driver but when driving try using the baseball grip and really concentrate on tempo and rythm

QuickTip: Open the face at address.

    Thanks.
Ill try that baseball grip thing if i get a chance to go to the range( havent gone in a couple years:P)

Tis the bane of my life. St.Stephens day i was 6 over and now I'm closer to 18:o

    Hopefully your advice works:cool:

    Definitely don't do that.

My bad shot is a hook. I have a tendency at times to really turn the ball over. My causes are coming in too steep and turning the hands over.

I have a tendency to slump a little, but i was encouraged by a teaching pro to stand up taller to the ball, lifting my chin up and also lifting my backside up. This gives me more clearance room on the way through.

In fairness Graeme the OP did ask for a quick fix and opening the club face a degree or two at address is definitely going to help.
Long term the OP should make a visit to his local pro.

One possible cause might be your chest stop turning through impact. When this happens your wrists will flip over causing a nice little hook. I was doing this for ages and our pro told me to continue turning my chest to the target and my hooks are gone. Sometimes even get a small fade

Thanks Graeme and obwon...i do like a quick fix that i can continue to use when the problem is solved.

I don't want to spend my golfing career playing with the face slightly open...it can't be good for consistency. I won't write it off tho. If i hit one OB it will definitely be my "go-to" thought.

    But we must think positively.

Turn my chest and better posture and I'll be back to my best:cool: Ill keep ye posted.

Whoevers tip works....get their post thanked....:eek::eek::eek::eek:
    What more could you want?:P

The most common reason for the snap hook is an out to in swing path with a closed face at impact.

That's a pull hook. The ball will start left and continue further left and in my opinion is not that common. The ball will go quite far.

A snap hook starts straight or to the right. It's caused by an in-to-out swing (or straight) and then the hands turning over closing the clubface at impact. The result is a low running shot that barely gets off the ground.

To stop a snap hook you need to stand taller and get the swing moving away from your body and not round it at the back swing. You also want to loosen and weaken your grip and not roll the wrists through impact (as much). Check your alignment.......are your shoulders closed but the feet and clubface square. If so then align your clubface and hips with your shoulder alignment. Where's the ball position......check that it hasn't crept back too far.

If you want to stop hooking then learn how to fade the ball? The opposite applies to slicers.

OP tbh there are no quick fix's for swing faults, your best option is to get a few lessons from your pro, he'll be able to spot what doing wrong immediately and set you on the right path.
One thing that is guaranteed when you ask other golfers for advice on your swing is that you will plenty of "tips" and quite often they'll be conflicting.

I'm in no way qualified to give anyone swing advice but seeing as there is a "Thanks" on offer to whatever tip works I'm going to try anyway. :)

I would say you need to stop lining up so far right and set up more square/open to lessen the inside out swing path you have.
Also swing down the line - even a bit to the left.
The more to the right you swing - the more "hook spin" you are putting on the ball. You may hit some pulls though if you're clubface is still too closed.

This sounds so similar to what I went through at the beginning of last year. The ball wouldn't get above head height in its flight and hook wickedly to the left. I met a member of my course at the range one evening and he was telling me he had had gone thru the same thing but a pro told him his right hand was coming around under the grip too much.... So a slight change to the right hand solved it for him...... and me I might add. I tried it and while it felt uncomfortable for a while, it worked a treat. I used to turn my hand right under the grip too much. Now I dont have such a strong grip with my right hand and it feels fine. This mightn't be your problem, but its worth trying as the smallest thing can make you hook the ball and it sorted me in 10 minutes:D

I had this problem years ago it sounds like your left and right hand are turned to far over to your right leg try and get both your left and right thumb down the middle of the grip.

Its not perfect but if that feels really difficult then its the grip thats your problem.

To put it simply the ball is hooking because the clubface is shut when it hits the ball.

Give it a go and try it out.

Phil, i've been having a similar problem myself this past 2-3 weeks. It's an absolute killer. I also found out that my grip was a major problem. By gripping it with my fingers rather than my hands and lightening my grip i've finally (hopefully!) managed to sort it.

Another drill i found that helped me on line was one where you put three balls down on the mat/ground.
    O
    __O
    ____O

Like that above... it stops you taking the club back on the inside. It's probably too soon to say if it's a certain cure... but so far so good!

OP I think I said above to loosen (grip lighter) and weaken your grip.

However you'll get every bit of advice under the sun here......only a good teacher will see what you are doing wrong.

Sorry if its off topic but I'm playing there on Sunday too Phil. Are you playing in the Scratch Cup on the Cashen? I hope the weather stays like it is at the moment and the day should be calm enough. Looking forward to it though. It's normally held on the old course and I've only played Cashen the once so I don't remember much about it....except that it's class.

Yup. My first intermediate scratch cup:eek:
I've been off 16 for a year and a half but never played in one:o

Ya that guy who walked around Ireland playing all the good golf courses put Cashen in his top 3.
I know wind is "part of the experience" but i dont know if i could handle it tbh.

Ya. Looking forward to it. Hopefully i can break 100:cool:

It's a great course alright and at least the first tee shot isn't as daunting as the first on the Old course ( Graveyard to the right...for slicers anyway!!!)
What time are you teeing off? I'm off @ 3.00. Best of luck anyway

Kevin M will be thrilled that someone thinks he walked around Ireland. He did it in a camper van. His book is on the shelves today I think.

There was another guy,( who had is exploits chronicled in The Examiner),who actually walked from course to course He didn't play every course in Ireland but a lot of the links courses as far as I know. I'd say that is who Phil is talking about.
