I am in the early stages of considering a trip to Rome (most likely for a week) and I would welcome any suggestions, particularly hotel recommendations.

I used this website to book all accommodations over there www.venere.com

Also - www.viator.com is great to show what day trips to do. Don't buy tickets for the bus tours as you can get them when you're over there and I would highly recommend the red bus 110 over there adn teh archaeobus - they go everywhere and are great for when you first arrive and should get an oversight of teh whole of Rome.

Rome is a wonderful destination, there is tonnes to see and do. I stayed in a 'cheap 'n cheerful' hotel called the Hotel Caprice. It is located just off a lovely up-market street called the Via Veneto and is two mins from a metro station. I think I paid roughly €100 per night. Rome is pretty pricey for hotels. This one was nice, pretty basic, but clean and comfortable with tasty brekkie included. It was handy being close to the metro, although there are only 2 metro lines, so it isn't as good as the underground system in Paris or London.

    Must see's in Rome include:

    Colliseum
    Forum/Palantine Hill
    Vatican Musuem
St Peter's Basillica (make sure you go up to the top of the dome for beautiful views)
    Pantheon
    Spanish Steps
    Trevi Fountain
    Piazza Navona

To avoid massive queues at the Colliseum, go on a guided tour, it is a bit more expensive, but you get so much more out of it. They include a guide to the Forum as well, otherwise you might just find that you're looking at a load of pillars not knowing what they are. The guides are really informative and funny. You will see loads of the outside the colliseum, you don't have to pre book or anything.

But the best thing about Rome is just wandering around and drinking in the sights. You will turn a corner and see an amazing building that anywhere else in the world would be massive tourist attraction. But in Rome they are everywhere and don't even make the guidebook! It is a very 'walking friendly' city and you could spend days and days just wandering.

The fact that you are staying for a week, I would look at the possibilty of doing a daytrip somewhere. Might be nice to get out of the city, especially if you are going during the summer. Maybe someone else could suggest one.

People say that Rome is a very expensive city, but that was not my experience. There are restaurants of all prices, and I found that by moving a couple of streets away from the main tourist spots, you can get a great meal for about 1/3 cheaper than slap bang in front of a big attraction. Beer is quite expensive, but wine very cheap, so if you can stick to wine, you will be fine.

    Hi all,
i'd love to go to rome in the july/august period (my friend is a teacher so this is his only real window in the summer).
My only concern is the weather at this time of the year,i am hearing alot about the sweltering heat and all that.
Would anybody have any experiences/tips on this?
It would be greatly appreciated as we are trying to book it this week if we can...

    Hi,

I was in Rome last July/August and it is rather hot but it's not clammy which is good and bad - i.e. you mightn't realise how hot in fact it is and forget to re-apply sunscreen, etc. But as long as you wear loose fitting clothing, most places are well equipted for the heat and have air conditioning and perhaps if you made an effort to stay out of hte sun during peak hours (12-2) and maybe have lunch at this time, indoors, then there won't be too much discomfort if any.

Can anyone recomend the cheapest way to get to Rome? The champions league final is on the cheapest flight from Dublin is €500. Are there any airports nearby ? I dont mind a few hours on a train

Hey - I use www.skyscanner.com religiously! It compares all the sites but i'm guessing the cheapest will be Ryanair flying into Ciampino airport. Don't think it would be any cheaper to fly into another city and get the train to Rome eventhough they've got one of the biggest train stations in Italy (Termini) - Aer Lingus only flies into Rome's second airort -Fiumicino - which is always more expensive thatn Ciampino.

    Hope the above helps.

think your going to find it tough to get anything under 500euro, try naples 3.5hrs by train or if you could get to florence it only 1.5hr on the fast train eurostar its called (not D eurostar) but thats bout 70euro. how long are you planning on spending there?? if you could make a hoilday out of it and maybe fly mon to mon or something u would hav a better chance of getting something decent, rome is a fab city well worth spending some time there.
