Darkening haircolour

When I was a baby, I had red hair. Then it turned white blonde until I was about 10, and has darkened ever since. Both my parents have dark brown hair but there is blonde on my mother's side of the family (German) and blonde as well as red on my dad's side (French).

I started lightening my hair artificially when I was around 14, and I've dyed my hair pretty consistently ever since. Back in November I dyed my hair a darkish brown, and was expecting my roots to come in lighter.... but they don't seem to have! Apparently, my hair is dark brown now!

I'm actually kind of shocked. I'd thought for a long time that my hair wasn't much darker than what I was lightening it to - which was a sort of golden brown colour.

Has anyone else's hair darkened from dark blonde to dark brown following puberty? I know hair colour often changes dramatically through childhood, but at this rate I'm going to have black hair just before it starts turning grey!

Yup, my hair was white blonde as a kid gradually changing to dirty blonde, but it always went blonde blonde in the sun, at 14 I started experimenting with hair dye, black, red, blonde, I've been every colour.
At 18 I started getting it regularly highlighted, kept the same blonde look till I was 25, dyed it brown, hated it and went back to the highlights a month later.
Now at 30 I decided the highlights were too much hassle and upkeep and went brown again, gradually my roots are growing out and I'm suprised at how my roots are now darker then the "dark brown" dye I have in.
My assumption is after years of being undercover my hair obviously is slightly darker then it was as it hasn't been exposed to the sun in 12 years, I'm sure as my own colour comes through it will lighten with the sun as it grows.
Oh and I also found out I have grey hairs...:(

I had very blonde hair as a child, which eventually ended up a rotten dirty mousy blonde by the time I was 13. Its a pain to have to keep dyeing it to have it a halfway decent colour.

Man, that sucks. I was blonde for ten years and went dark late last year for various reasons - brittle hair, hairdressing bills, wanting a change etc.

Love the dark and everyone reckons it suits me much better, hair is in amazing condition etc.......... Except I'm now having to re-dye it every couple of months because of the amount of gray hairs I've found since going dark. And of course they're all in my fringe/front of my hair. I noticed a few by looking REALLY closely when I was a blonde but wrote it off as just a few...now I know the horrible truth.

    It sucks.

God, I'm the same, I had white blonde hair as a kid and it too went really dark and dull as I hit my teens. Now in my mid 20s it hasn't quite gotten brown, but it's a horrible boring dark blonde colour. Then I had a baby and since pregancy my hair went even darker ( still dark blonde) So now I've decided to put highlights in so that I can actually call myself blonde again! ( Am afraid to try brown!)

I've had several people accuse me of not being ginger in recent years thanks to this phenomen .
    The trauma!!!

    I was born brunette.

Had pretty much white-blond hair as a kid right up until about 12 or so. When i started to get regular haircuts (played GAA as a teenager so long-ish hair became a liability) it got darker and darker and now it's a dim brown colour with darker and lighter areas within it that change with the weather.

I've had a few 'compliments' on having such a great dye job lately as the weather has changed :/

Strategic application of hats have stopped that.

Probably the same as pretty much all kids being born with blue eyes that change over the first few weeks... only over a longer stretch of time.

Yup! As a kid had blonde hair! Then in the teens it started getting to that "dirty blonde" look, then i started putting in highlights, but recently i have got a new hairdresser and guess he didnt put in as many highlights as my usual hairdresser would have and my natural colour is coming through pretty strong, a dark enough chestnut brown!
Im shocked! I want to keep my lovely blonde hair! Even my "dirty" blonde look! and then on the other hand alot of my friends like it and want me to go darker and keep the brown hair! but my hairdresser told em all to p1ss off and said "blone hair for blonde personailty"

    :)

This happened to most of my classmates. They were born with blonde hair that got darker as the years went on (I, on the other hand, was born with black hair that stayed black, even after copious amounts of time in the sun!). One girl though, was born with black curly hair, but when she got to be a toddler, it turned blonde and straight.

From my newborn baby photos I was born with really dark hair, after a few months this fell out and I was a light blonde colour which then turned ashy blonde til I was about 14. I remember in secondary school people use to ask me had I dyed my hair blonde as sometimes it looked bright blonde (I wasn't highlighting it at this stage) and sometimes a red tinge off it. When I was about 15 it looked dark brown, started colouring it- have been every colour. When I was 21, decided to dye it very dark, kept this until two years ago decided to go blonde again. Now I'm thinking of going back brunette as the blonde is hard and costly to keep!
