Over filled engine oil

Hi, I have over filled my diesel car with engine oil. It's about 1/2 inch above the top mark on the dipstick. Will this cause any harm?

Can you take a pic of the dipstick just after dipping it? It depends on how much you've overfilled it. Ideally you should let some out to bring it back to where it should be. There is a certain amount that you can get away with, but there is an amount that can cause damage if you don't let some out...

Did you start the car since you did it. Then stop let it settle and dip it again. The level will drop. If it is overfull its not that big a job to drain a bit out. Its not meant to be overfull.

Op were you just topping up the oil or did you drain out the old oil before overfilling it?

open the sump nut and leave a bit drain out.. Overfilling is nearly as bad as not filling it enough... you can feck up the oil seals.

It's actually a lot worse! It depends on how much it was been overfilled, any more than the minimum and you could be in the manure business. I don't know whether the oil was actually changed or just topped up, I get the impression that it was just being topped up. If it was being changed, I think the OP would have just let some out and that would be the end of that issue.

    +1

Overfilling is worse - the crankshaft can hit the oil at high revs and you can break the crank, connecting rods etc, etc.

I didn't think they were just topping it up. That more likely alright.

Why never fill more than the minimum. Did you mean the maximum.

Yes I was just topping it up. Dipped it again a few minutes ago and it is about a bit (5-10mm) over the max level. Could that cause alot of damage?
I didn't really have any place to drain the sump where I live.

    5 - 10 mm should be fine.

Yeah sorry, meant to say maximum! Or I mean I meant to say the minimum ABOVE the maximum!

The reason why I was topping it up is because there is an oil leak. Can't see where exactly it is coming from but it has been there for a while because there is an area of dry oily dirt around the drip. It will fail the NCT for an oil leak won't it?

There;s a good chance they eouldnt notice it.

Well if there's an oil leak, it won't be above the max for long! ;)

What car/year/engine? some people here might be able to advise specific places to check for the oil leak.....

    5 to 10mm shouldn't cause a problem...

Leave the car sitting overnight and dip it again tomorrow morning when the oil is cold and fully drained into sump. It will give a more accurate reading.

It is an 01 Diesel peugeot 406. The engine isn't smokey or anything like that. I think its coming down at the back of the engine and around the sump nut. How high up its coming from I don't know. The oil filter is on the front so its not from there. Any ideas?
