Best guitar for a beginer

    Hi folks,

I want to get a guitar for my daughter who will be nine next week. She is very musical and loves all percussion instruments, plays a little keyboard, but her main passion is singing.
However, she has of late been picking up and attempting to play her cousins guitar, every chance she gets, that said, she doesn't know cords etc, and I quite frankly have not got a bogs notion.

My question is this, I want to get it as a surprise, bearing in mind that she is nine, she could very possibly be bored with it in no time, so I don't want to spend a fortune on it.
What would be best to buy?

    Thanks

    Bell:D

    Hi bell,

You should probably specify if you want an acoustic of an electric guitar! what is her cousins??

She would need a shortscale guitar anyways, have a look here: http://www.thomann.de/ie/shortscale_guitars.html its a very reputable site that most people around here have got something off!

failing that you can get a half size guitar in smyths toystore beside the square! ive played them and they are actually quite good and they wouldnt cost an arm and a leg!

If your willing to splash some cash then the BEST guitar out there thats shortscale withough blowing the bank is the squier duosonic.

    Hey Folks,

Thanks so much for such detailed replies, and for the links etc, it was a really great help.
I had a look at the ones in smyths this afternoon, but because it was a toy store I was dubious.
I just love the Hello Kitty fender, but it's not my choice.
I phoned a friend in a band today, and he said, don't surprise her, bring her with you and let her try which ones suit her size etc.
So that's the plan, I love the thorman site, and I couldn't get over how good the prices are, so it is one place I will go look at again.

Thanks a million for the help I was genuinely flummoxed with looking at different guitars. .I think an acoustic will be best for her first guitar, but heading into Waltons during week with her, and I have no doubt she will be chuffed to bits.

    Take care

I definetly would say don't go for the squire, people get pulled towards them because of the fender badge that comes with them but also i would advise against sx guitars if you are planning on getting her an electric, otherwise sx are fine for acoustics. A personal favorite of mine is aria guitars (for electric) but as one of the guys said before, bring her to a shop a let her play the guitars and even if she can't play that much it doesn't matter, once she can get a feel for what feels good for her. I would also like to say if you end up going to waltons to have a look for a guitar, they will point you towards the sx and they are probably the cheapest cause they come with an amp and whatever else but you would be much better off paying an extra 50/100 euro on a quality guitar that will make her want to play it and you could get an amp for about 50 euro new or might be better to buy a second hand one, check out www.adverts.ie or www.gumtree.ie and if find a good offers, post it here and we can advise you further

Have you ever played the duosonic? True that 90% of squiers are cack but the duosonic sounds and plays a lot nicer than some 500 euro guitars. Its a great little yolk.

    Hey Folks,

Just wanted to say a final thank you for all the advice.

We went to the Music Box in Navan today and helpful is an understatement of what we got in there.
Ciaran who looked after us made my young rocker feel very much at ease, let her try out the guitars, (I could see her being very drawn to a pink electric one) but he was great at talking just simple sense to her.

In the end we got a full size SX acoustic in black, with all the bells and whistles to go with it, as I type she is watching the dvd with guitar in her arms. . .

I have no doubt that I will be popping back here many times, (Putting on the guitar strap tested me to the limit) looking for more advice.

    Thanks again.
