Internet Explorer Goes Down

I have a new computer from Dell with IE7 and Windows Vista. There have been several problems but the latest is with IE which frequently freezes, fades and goes down. I get an error message saying "Internet Explorer is trying to find a solution" and within seconds IE is back. However I lose the websites I have been working on or viewing. Dell say that since it is not a hardware issue they would have to charge me 60 euros to run a software diagnostic. Is this a recognisable problem? And is there a cure without paying 60 euros to Dell?

    try resetting internet explorer.
    1 click on tools
    2 internet options
    3 click advanced tab
    4 click reset
it may also be wise to run a malware scan using for exzample spybot search and destroy or ad-aware respective links

I am working from a different computer at the moment, but I will try the reset tomorrow. I presume my Norton package would pick up any virus/malware problems automatically. Someone else has suggested that it may be a problem with an outdated Flash Player and to install ver 10.0.22.87.
    Any thoughts on that?

Locate your Norton CD and BURN IT.

    Now: http://free.avg.com/

    Get Firefox: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Forget about using IE, just use Firefox or Google Chrome. It's the simplest solution. And get rid of Norton, it's as bad as a virus. Use AVG as suggested above.

Antivirus software usualy does not pick up all threats so it is a good idea to run scans using alternate software just to make sure. I would think it is unlikey that an outdated flash player would cause your problem although it is possible it could cause conflicts. It is easy to test this by updating to the latest version. If none of the above work try reinstalling internet explorer. I dont use IE much. I use opera which has a email client which will download my email automatically also i like it`s quick dial feature which allows me to set up links to favourite sites one click takes you there. A download manager is also included.

If you have had problems from the start then it should be Dells problem regardless of software. If they cant / wont help try rebuilding from scratch. Back up any important data 1st by doing a file transfer perhaps.

That's one thing I really like about firefox, after a crash it asks if you'd like to restore the tabs you had open before the crash.

Yeah it's great like that. Nothing worse than writing a long reply to post on a forum, and losing it at the last minute. Firefox always remembers it, it's very handy.

Thank. One question before I reset. When I go to reset using Tools as you suggest I get a message saying "reset should only be use if the browser is in an unusable state" The message has caused me to pause before proceeding because it suggests that there will be effects eg losing favourites, preset pages, gadgets etc. Is there anything like this I should be aware of before resetting?

yes it will disable all plugins such as flash ect. It will also lose all your favourites and bookmarks but as your browswer is unusable it may be worth a try. you can renable plug in`s as you need them. I have not used explorer much. There is another option you could try first (just thought of it) that is to first disable all ad ons then renable one by one to see if this will solve your problem do not delete any plugin at this point unless you are sure you dont need it. but don`t panic if you do accidently remove one as you can download and reinstall it
    see below to disable/renable plugins

    under internet options

    1 select programmes
    2 manage add ons
3 under settings enable or disable plugins

I downloaded Firefox (which helpfully copied in favourites, settings etc from IE) and it seems to be running smoothly. However, since the problem with IE was intermittent it may be some time before I can say that the change of browser solved the problem. If, of course, I get the same difficulties in Firefox then I will know that the problem lies elsewhere.
