Going to Edinburgh in April for a weekend. Could anyone recommend some good nice hotel not far from things. Have read sites and read reviews but would like some recommendations.

Also is there stuff to do during the day there.

Not sure of your budget but the Ibis on Nicholson street is a good modern standard ibis and is smack bang in the middle of things. Otherwise the thistle hotel at the top of princes street is good, looks like a bit of a sixties concrete monster on the outside but the inside is good.

If your splashing out check out the radisson on the royal mile. If you want to blow your budget check out the balmoral on princes street Edinburghs most famous hotel.

The Thistle hotel is really nice. Theres lots to do during the day. Visit Edinburgh castle, or walk up to the top of Arthurs Seat and there's lots of shopping to do on Princes Street.

The Thistle is in a great location as well; central to everything.

Apex European is in a good location, it's on the road leading in from the airport into town, near Murrayfield, the airport express bus passes outside. It's about 120 euro per night, I think. It's only about 10 mins walk to Princes Street.

Things to do during the day - the Castle is amazing - you could spend a half a day here alone. Wandering around the Royal Mile is great too. Princes Street Gardens are lovely. Do an open bus tour from Waverly Bridge and you will see places of interest to visit on the way - you can usually hop on and hop off. There's the Edinburgh Dungeon tours too, they're a bit of craic. Night life is busy around Grassmarket, plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

I can't wait to go again!

There are some amazing self-catering options in the Old Town, right behind the castle. I stayed in one a few years ago that was located in quiet cobbled laneway. When you came out the front door and looked up, the castle was right above you! And just steps away from bars, restaurants and lots of interesting things to see and do. Choice 1 or 2 bedroom apartments with sitting rooms, lovely bedrooms and bathrooms and full kitchen are a good choice if you're planning a couple of days or more. Hotels in Edinburgh are quite pricey.

    Cheers,
    T.
