    Any suggestions or nominations?

If there were someone in the cycling advocacy community who was qualified and willing to do this then it would be great to get someone on the board who could speak up for cyclists and cycling.

Public's chance to steer transport policy

FED up complaining about traffic in Dublin? Now's your chance to actually do something about it.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey wants members of the public to nominate themselves to sit on the board of the Dublin Transportation Authority (DTA), with successful applicants enjoying full voting rights and an annual stipend of €12,000. And it's open to anyone with an interest in transport matters across the land, as the DTA will not only focus on unlocking the gridlock in the capital, but will also take charge of bus licensing and other transport issues outside Dublin.

    Eligible

The minister wants six board positions to be filled by people outside the loop and outside party politics. There will be 10 board members in total.

The other four members will be the Dublin City Manager, the chief executive of the DTA, a senior DTA official and the chairman. But TDs, Senators and MEPs need not apply. Only members of the public and county councillors are eligible.

"No one has approached a state board appointment process like this, but the minister is keen to throw it open to everyone," one source said.

The Department of Transport's website www.transport.ie will today invite members of the public with expertise in transport, land-use planning and the environment to submit a two-page summary outlining why they should be appointed, with Mr Dempsey to have the final say.

Last night Transparency International Ireland, which campaigns against corruption, applauded the move. "It's a welcome step in the right direction," a spokesman said.

Not sure why I should be surprised but I can't find details of this on transport.ie to enquire further (not for me).

It's tucked away a bit, but it's there:

Is there a cycling candidate, with sensible policies, going for this? If not, one of us should do it.

I would do it. Have always wanted to get into policy/politics, but failed to find a party with my views.

    This could be my vehicle.

I am going to look into this a bit further. Thanks to the OP for posting this.

I imagine that one of the head honchos in the Dublin Cycling Campaign will apply. I'll send it on, in the unlikely event that they are not aware of this already.

I'm a lowly honcho, but it is something I'd consider.
