I was playing with a couple of new members in my club on Sat (Captains Drive In)

They were discussing their forthcoming golf trip, no not to Spain or Portugal or some far flung place where the "caddies" are great but in Ireland.

The deal they got looks good. Its if remember correctly, 4 nights B&B, 4 lunches, 4 evening meals, 5 hours tuition with pro, 4 rounds golf. This is in Rossapenna, and all 520 yoyo

Anyone else like to share any good home grown deals.

Played with a guy last Saturday, he was actually there last week, three nights B&B cost him 159, and they gave him the golf for €20 a round for three days...

If anyone is interested I know a guy that has holiday homes on Rosapenna and does great deals of accommodation and green fees. If you are interested PM me and I'll pass you on the details.

FYI - Rosapenna is quality. Two courses: 1: Sandy Hills is the pick of the bunch, really brilliant links course. 2: Old Tom Morris starts off slow and then gets good.

Well worth a visit to the region - I holiday there every year and love the golf.

    It's in north Donegal.

If you're up this way you should play nearby Portsalon as well.

And since we're discussing Ulster, there was a piece on 'stay and play' deals in the Irish Times yesterday (page 22 main section), including Lough Erne, Portrush, Belfast and Downings (Rosapenna).

Kevin - thats some good advice. Donegal is a real treasure chest for links courses. Out of all the regions in Ireland its my personal favourite, good value, great courses and they are never really busy.

In and around Downings you also have St. Patricks, I've never played it but have heard conflicting reviews. Its owned by a local hotelier so not a club and is open to the public. The second course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and his team - did you manage to play that one?

Donegal and Kerry would be my two favourite counties - with Donegal sneaking it, mostly because the courses are very under-appreciated (apart from Ballyliffin). I'm not surprised that Rosapenna are having to do such a great deal. If people knew how good it was their offer would be over-subscribed in a heartbeat. There will be a lot of other courses following suit very soon.

As far as I know St. Patrick's is still closed. I was there in April 08 and there's a dirt track that leads nowhere. The managers at Rosapenna and Portsalon were as much in the dark as I was. Something to do with planning permission (no clubhouse of any description) and owing Nicklaus money, I think. But you get to see it from the Sandy Hills course and it looks like it has great potential.

Theres a real gem of a course located on Cruit Island about an hours drive from Rosapenna-its only a 9 hole but has perhaps the best par 3 in Ireland. Views are amazing and if you were to decide on Donegal I'd seriously suggest taking this one in.

The official website is a bit dismal and does no justice to the course rated by many as the best 9 hole in the world. http://www.cruitislandgolfclub.com/

Donegal Airport is also located nearby if you wanted to fly from Dublin and hire a minibus for the few days? Flights are reasonably priced too with Aer Arann. The link to the cottages in my sig below are located 2 miles from the course-but self catering may not be everyone's cup of tea. PM me however if you want to get a discount as I know the owners.
