Statutory cooling off period - car insurance

    Hi all,

Very simply we filled out an online insurance application online for car insurance and paid for it with a mastercard.

Now the form came out in the mail - sign and return and all good etcetera.

The only issue is (I am kicking myself here) - I have my GF down as having 5 years NCB in her own name in this country. Now she does not have this and I cannot remember selecting this but it is on the documentation so I must have done so. idiot that I am.:)

Now obviously the quote is not valid but do we have a cooling off period of cancellation without explantion and without affecting our rights. I would prefer to avoid the 20% cancellation fee/ misinformation fee.

    Any help much appreciated.

OP, I'm not really sure what you're asking here. Perhaps you could clarify?

I would imagine that the 5 years NCB would make a substantial difference to the quote, and it may be grounds for the company to refuse to insure you on the basis of the wrong information.

    Hi Quaver,

    This is in motors:

It appears the mistake is theirs. I selected 5 years driving experience which is correct and printed off this online quote which was within 1 cent of the original and clearly states the fact that there is 0 NCB.

Appreciate the help Quaver as I was getting a bit hot albeit unnecessarily so!:)

Wow, even Insurance copmanies can make mistakes! Whoda thunk it!:P

You should make them aware of their mistake though, it's probably just a typo. Shouldn't be too much of a problem IMO.

I believe yes. It would be classed as a contract negotiated away from a business premises and would therefore carry a statutory 10 day cooling off period.

Another helpful piece of European law that we would never have brought in ourselves.:)
