Try updating the firmware on your video card and your BIOS. Monitor temperature levels of video card if possible...

Did you try reinstalling Flash Player? I presume you have sound working normally (outside of the web browser)

Are you getting an error or what's happening? You could try downloading VLC player and open the .vob files directly.

Delete all temporary files, cookies and caches. Also check for viruses. If this fails try a "master reset" on IE (Internet Options > Advanced tab > Ye Old Big RESET Button Of Doom) and/or completely uninstall and reinstall Firefox and plugins and see if you get any changes.

As for the DVD player... does it come up as a DVD player in Windows Explorer or does it come up as a CD drive? Does it have the wrong region set? Can it play other media (CD, audio CD, data DVD etc.) correctly?

And I don't like the "humming sound" bit. Is it loud? Maybe your fan is clogged, obstructed or otherwise borked, which could have a dramatic effecct on heat and make a funny noise to boot.

yes cd can play data/audio ok i think its specifically a dvd problem.

i tried master reset and it appeared to work for explorer. however i still have no sound on firefox??

yes i reckon my fan may have a problem what is the best solution for this?

thanks v much for all help btw

Install VLC player from videolan.org and it will give you the codecs for playing dvd's.

As for the sound issue in firefox in the system try (area beside the clock) there should be a little sound icon click this and select mixer. Make sure firefox has the slider all the way up.

If that doesnt work install flash player in IE and it should be able to hear sound in that (flash players have to be installed for each browser)

Regarding the fan issue it needs to have the dusk blow out get a can of compressed air. Is this a laptop or PC. As said before monitor temps use something like hwmonitor if they're to high the system will need to be cleaned and the fan replaced if its not doing its job.
