How much should I pay to trade?

I'm considering trading in a '00 Rav4 (3 door) against a '97 728. I've got my own expectations of what I should pay to trade but I'm looking for a second opinion from more experienced users!

The Rav is manual, cloth, all elecs, s/r, bluetooth hands free, nct, serviced, new tyres, 3 months tax left.

The 728 is a minter with pretty much every conceiveable extra, FBMWSH, nct, etc.

If you were a dealer how much would you be looking for along with the Rav?

...you mean how much is he giving you with the 728 for the RAV, surely ?

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Neither is a 9 year old Rav4....

Well I reckon the Rav4 is worth about €4k retail so I would expect €3k for it trade. The asking price for the 728 is €4,950 which is way over priced but it is an absolutely beautiful example with all the bells and whistles and I would be willing to give €4k for it on a straight deal, but I need to trade in the Rav.

    Why? This is why:

I know, I know - DL reg but there is 110k on the clock and it's fully documented.

    Exactly!

    BTW the Rav4 belongs to my GF. She wants a 5Series (I have one) - I want a 7!

00 RAV4 retailing on carzone for €4k ( lowest price)

97 bMW 728 retailing for €3k on car zone......( lowest price)

OP - I don't mean to p1ss in your cornflakes, but I think that's quite a tarty looking 7. If you really want it, at least go over the recent SH with a fine-toothed comb and have the car comprehensively examined. In my experience, the kind of love-everything-shiny owner who does that to a car often does it at the expense of essential & preventative maintenance. I'd expect to get at least €1000 with the BMW for the RAV4.

I really think you're mental to trade against that. Sell the Rav privately and pick up a 728 very cheap with the cash then.

I personally wouldn't be paying anything with the Rav for that car, and I'd want the BMW fully serviced before sale too.

Do try and get a V8. The 6-pot doesn't cut the mustard in the 7. There's plenty of choice out there and a V8 shouldn't cost you any more. By very aware though what you buy. These cars are getting old now and if you want to minimise your chances of very expensive surprises, you need to buy wisely. Mileage is not important. Condition and service history is important.

This is my honest opinion based on over 5 years of ownership of a 735. The fact that it is now for sale does not affect my opinion.

A garage I worked in before had a 02 728. It was quite possibly the most horrible drive I've had in a long time. The only possible 7 series that could be worse than it was the 718i they used to sell in Asia.

As Unkel said, get a v8. The overall running costs aren't going to be much more, and in fact, it might break even on economy as you won't need to work the engine so hard to get up to speed.

If you go for the V8 make sure its the 4.4L as this didn't have the potential nikasil bore liner problems of the 4.0L.

+1 on getting the V8, also I heard that the 735i can be problematic.

This is a nice one, great colour and spec and the cheapest sport that I could find.

Good point mentioning the Nikasil issue, but your facts are a bit wrong. Avoid the V8 M60 engine, as it could have or develop the Nikasil issue. Any V8 M62 engine is fine.

    M60: '93-'95 3.0l 730 and 4.0l 740
    M62: '96 and later 3.5l 735 and 4.4l 740

If in doubt, cheque the VLC or the tax disc. 3.5l and 4.4l is good. 3.0l and 4.0l is bad

I thought the 735 was a straight 6, my bad! Either way, tax and fuel being similar, I'd go for the 4.4L.

Actually, if I had the money, i'd go for this if I was getting a 4.4L BMW:

The 735 in the older model was! I'd sooner a 4.4 too, but i'd put condition and service history above engine capacity as long as it was a V8. I'd actually assumed the car the OP posted was a 740, I don't think i've ever really got my head around the idea of a 2.8 in a car like that.

I am not 100% sure, but that looks like an Alpina front lip without the decals. It may not be to your taste, but that wouldn't make me think it hasn't been cared for.

The reason I was looking for a 728 is that it would still have similar power to my 523 but not give me the expensive running costs of a 735/40.

I don't do huge mileage so I don't care about the consumption. What would annoy me is the tax. Even though I would prefer to go 99/00 this car just got my eye because of the spec. If it had Alpina wheels I would run a mile, (especially with the DL reg) but it was the M-Parrell's that really sold me as an enthusiasts car not a boy racer in a car too big for him.

I love V8's, my weekend car is one (it's 6.6 btw) but I don't think a 740 is anywhere near a practical daily driver in this country. Furthermore, there is plenty of this stuff out there but it's a long wait to pick up one exactly as you want it.

There's my enthusiasm getting the better of me again.........

Very true, patience is the key.
