    THE JAPANESE POPSTARS

"They Might Also Be The Most Exciting New Electronic Act On The Planet" - Mixmag
"Do believe the hype..." - IDJ Magzine

VOTED BEST LIVE ACT @ IRISH DANCE MUSIC AWARDS 2009
VOTED BEST ALBUM @ IRISH DANCE MUSIC AWARDS 2009
BEST BREAKTHROUGH PRODUCERS - DJ MAG 'BEST OF BRITISH' AWARDS 2008

The Japanese Popstars are riding a wave of great live gigs, major festival bookings, and media praise off the back of their amazing energy driven live shows and their critically acclaimed debut album 'We Just Are'.

Native to Northern Ireland (any fetishists expecting cute Japanese girls can leave now), and consisting of Declan McLaughlin aka Decky Hedrock, Gary Curran, and Gareth Donoghue. The Japanese Popstars are signed to bespoke indie label, Gung-Ho Recordings (Gus Gus, Zoo Brazil) in the UK, and Beatink in Japan (home of Underworld, Aphex Twin, Cinematic Orchestra).

The Japanese Popstars only parallel with rock music is that they'd built up a sizable live following before releasing their first major single - some might even say cultish, judging by the amount of clips on Youtube. Their gigs are typically raucous affairs, with an energy that crackles with each beat, chord, and keyboard stab.

However, let's get one thing straight about the music - The Japanese Popstars aren't indie rave, or any other sub-sub-sub genre, theirs is big room, cool as f**k electronic music built for festivals and stadiums. They're not dance kids aping indie kids, nor are they indie kids dropping synths and calling themselves 'ravers'.

The Japanese Popstars - back to the future dance music for today, tomorrow, and forever, and it's coming to a field near you very soon.

"A Star Is Born....Or Should I Say Stars!" - Pete Tong, BBC Radio 1

"Do believe the hype..." - IDJ Magzine

    DJ HYPE

DJ Hype is a stage name of drum and bass producer and DJ Kevin Ford. DJ Hype is widely considered one of the pillars of modern drum and bass, with a pivotal role in expanding musical styles within that genre.

He was an early DJ on one of London’s pirate stations, Fantasy FM, and has been popular on the international DJ circuit, landing awards for Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ (in 1994 and 1995, respectively) at the U.K.’s Hardcore Awards. He is also one of the London radio station Kiss 100’s main attractions, and was a player in Suburban Base’s compilation series, Drum and Bass Selection. A champion of jungle’s dancefloor purity, DJ Hype has also rallied consistently against jungle's compartmentalization into artificial “scenes” in the late 1990s.

DJ Hype began producing in 1989, engineering and co-producing tracks (including chart-toppers such as “Exorcist” and “The Bee”) for hardcore staples Kickin’, Strictly Underground, and Suburban Base. Although he never lost touch with his breakbeat roots (even going so far as to spin hip-hop instrumentals over house tracks to add a bit of rhythmic flair), it wasn’t until he launched his own Ganja label in 1994 (with the single “Cops”) that he began seriously focusing on the post-rave possibilities of sampled breaks.

The Ganja label gained almost immediate popularity, primarily through floor-fillers such as "You Must Think First", "Tiger Style" and DJ Zinc’s “Super Sharp Shooter.” That popularity peaked with the release of their first LP in 1996: 'Still Smokin’, a label compilation released jointly by Ganja and cohort Pascal’s Frontline imprint. The album became one of the highest-selling independent jungle compilations. Re-released in 1997, its success also led to a major label deal with MCA’s Parousia sublabel and the establishment of True Playaz, a DJ Hype–led DJ and production unit also including DJ Zinc, Pascal, and Rude Bwoy Monty.

He will be joined on the night by Galway's JAY Q and MC Daddy Earl. Hype has played Galway several times in the past and always sells out!
