Hi everyone! I'm a recently converted 'gym bunny' My favourite type of cardio is spinning (twice a week) and working out on the cross trainer. Unfortunately it seems I'm after inheriting the mother's dodgy knees. They're starting to feel weak and sore and 'creak' a bit when I get up from sitting etc. :o Just wondering has anyone tried any supplements and/or exercises that might help? I've gone and bought some glucosamine with chondroitin but am a little skeptical as to their effectiveness. Can anyone shed some advise on the subject?

Ah bogey knees are a curse. I've had problems with my left knee going back to when I was 15. Ended up on crutches for the guts of a year and had to have 3 different surgeries on it. I struggled back playing football when I was 17 and found it hard but grin and bared it for a couple of seasons. I found it really hard to run though. I finally started taking Glucosamine & Chindroitin complex a few years back and I cant remember my knee been better. Even if a practitioner touched the medial side of my knee beforehand I started taking them I'd be in agony and now there's hardly any problems! So yeah, In my experience they're a God Send.

Go to a physio, and see what they say.

When they've diagnosed what's up, and given you a plan of treatment, have someone here look at the plan. If it's a case of muscular imbalances, there are people here who can definitely show you how to get it sorted.

On the other hand - I've had problems with my knee for years (Karate & running), but when I went to a physio about a year ago, he gave me a few simple exercises to sort out a muscle imbalance and it's been perfect ever since.
So it may be worth nipping it in the bud and getting it looked at.

Check you're setting the bike up correctly. have a look here

I find point 2 an important one for me personally. If that's off then applying power to the pedals can cause pain on days when my knees ache. Cross trainer isn't usually a cause for dodgy knees (from what I read, I'm no expert) so definitely look at how you're setting that bike up.

I have one bad knee, I tore ligaments in it a few years ago. The cross trainer has never bothered it but I avoid running!
