    hi all
am doing a bit of research into amount of GAA club players that actually
use gyms on their own time or part of club training...thinking of setting up a gym in a purely GAA area and wondering in general do many here use gyms. Cheers.

BTW price will be cheaper than city gyms with just as good equipment.

I don't know about individual players, but DCU is extremely popular with both the Dublin hurlers and footballers along with some of the League of Ireland soccer teams too. From what I've seen up here a good few of them go in their own time. Same down in Waterford, you'd regularly see Tony Browne in my local gym on the weeknights.

    Quiet from then

depends where you are setting it up.
A lot of places still see gyms as 'that there fancy bulls*it'- you'd be much better off outside running in the hailstones, etc.
With regard to my club- I know that the majority of us on the starting team would use the gym a few days a week.
My routine would be gym 5-6 days a week during off season and the during the season I would go3-4 days, depending on matches.

But the frequency doesnt matter, what matters is convincing people that they will go and that it will benefit them.
Loads of people pay gym memberships around Ireland and hardly ever go but will still pay it next year as they will convince themselves that next year will be different

I know that these lads http://www.k2ny.net/intro.php set up near my homeplace lately and have been hugely successful. Started out working solely with the GAA clubs I think.

I think nearly all GAA players at nearly every level are doing gym work now. I know a few mates of mine playing Junior A club football are in the gym a few times a week.

It would suit most of todays players to concentrate on developing their skills rather than developing the muscle.
Back to op. Gyms are good, but only if used properly. We ahve a gym in our club and our Senior and Junior players use it but each player has a personal plan done for him. Our minors use it for "max" 2 hours a wek in Dec and Jan and after that its skill work

What we are doing at the moment is an 8 week training by an instructor ! It starts with a test the first week and the same test the last week.

It measures various things flexibility, strenght, BMI, speed over certain distances etc...

I think it comes to €1000 euros for the period. I think Gaa teams and players are realising these kind of things are better value than a gym.

I play with a Junior A club and i suppose maybe 30-40% might be members of a Gym.

In this current economic climate i would not be quick to get involved in this sort of venture as it is essentially a leisure market and lads can find alternatives very easy.
