Hewlett Packard is to create 500 jobs at its base in Leixlip, Co Kildare.
The jobs will be announced with the establishment of a global services desk.
The firm already employs around 4,000 people in Ireland at its bases in Dublin, Leixlip, Galway and Belfast.

Managing Director of Hewlett Packard Ireland Martin Murphy said the company has plans for further growth over the coming years
The multi-lingual technical support centre will employ a range of people, including high-end graduates, and an element of the operation will also involve research and development.
300 jobs are to be brought on line immediately.
The new support service will deal with HP customers in 16 European languages.
The company says it decided to base the jobs in Ireland because of its access to a highly-skilled and talented labour pool.
However, some of its current staff have been affected by cuts with many taking leave in a bid to cut costs.

So, with this and the Intel Jobs, does this show that there maybe some light at the end of the tunnel? and will meteor ever bother to upgrade its network to work in leixlip?

Yeah it's great news for Leixlip and the country as a whole I suppose.

Now how do I go about applying....

What type of jobs are they, does anyone know?

The one reservation I'd have is the phrase 'multi-lingual'. In the context of Dublin 'multi-lingual' workplaces tend to have a focus towards jobs for people who speak English fluently as a second language. Languages are probably one of the weakest areas of qualification among Irish graduates.

That said, I'm sure this will provide gainful employment for plenty of people who would otherwise be unemployed here.

They are call centre jobs doing phone tech support.

They don't mention they are about to let 300 workers go from the plant though, so the reality is they are only creating 200 new jobs overall.

Yes, they are call centre jobs paying about 20K and not even permanent jobs, but contract jobs through CPL. If anyone is interested go to the CPL web page.

Back to reality there were tonnes of jobs like this in Ireland 6 years ago and now there will be again.

it appears these jobs only relate to non-english language roles - is this correct?

If you need a job they are always looking for people for this helpdesk even for the English language. If you can stick it a year and remain fairly professional you can get a promotion to 2nd level support where you work for HP and get a normal wage.

Not at the moment. Maybe in a month or two. If you speak dutch, you'll get a job.

You're with CPL a lot higher than just 2nd level/coach/etc.

See thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055561956&highlight=hewlett Those "new jobs" at HP are only current posistions in HP being moved to Leixlip.

And as for Intel........where did you get the idea they're hiring?!? They've just had 2 rounds of voluntary redundancies with a possibility of involuntary redudancies if they don't get sufficient numbers.

Correct kkelly77 about VR. Also they announced a 2% reduction in numbers globally with no news on Ireland as of yet.

Their product business has tanked and thats where the layoffs are. Their technological services are doing well and thats where the job creation is.

Incorrect. These 500 "new jobs" are for the tech support section of HP. The 500 jobs will be coming online in the next few months. But that doesn't mean 500 new jobs for external people, as some people will come from existing desks.

Thus the 80 jobs may be either the HP manufacturing, or the tech support.

Hi Syco

Is this effectively like temping in the Admin world? Is there any job security attached to this & do you have the same working conditions (annual leave, etc) as HP employees? Also, what's the Dutch desk like to work at? And are there real possibilities for advancement / promotion (be honest...pls)
