Name the seven riders who have won the Tour de France whilst being their countries National Road Race Champion.....since World War 2.

Try naming all 7 in the one post (i.e. not one guess per post) and we'll see who gets closest!

For a bonus point, name the only one of the seven riders who won the tour as National Road Race Champion AND National Time Trial Champion.

    God Speed...

Fairly certain the bonus answer is Riis. The others will probably be before my time :P

What kind of pie are we talking about here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭penfold83

Drugs pie. A nandralone and EPO crust with a centre of creamy testosterone.

Fausto Coppi, Charly Gaul, Frederico Bahamontes, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Bjarne Riis, Jan Ullrich.

    Bonus answer is Bahamontes.

Seems you're the only one interested in a piece of pie el tonto?

You're not far wrong, you got 5/7. But Bahamontes isn't one of them, so the bonus answer aint right!

Want me to tell you the full answer?

Oops, just realised Bahamontes was a double national champ in 1958 not '59. I'm wondering if I was wrong about Charly Gaul too. He was a multiple Luxembourg champion, but it looks like he didn't win it the year he won the Tour.

I'm pretty sure I'm right about Coppi, Merckx, Hinault, Riis and Ullrich. Let's see if I can get the other two.

Right, are the other two Ferdi Kubler in 1950 and Fignon in 84? Double winner was Riis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭penfold83

You are indeed, correct with those 5.

Charly Gaul, unbelievably, was Luxembourg national champion every year from 1956-1962 except for 1958, the year he won the tour.

By the way, I'm basing these answers on a presumption that every year the national championships took place before the tour, as they do now. Otherwise, the answers could be a little bit skewed. It's very hard to find out the exact dates of these kind of races that far back.

Yeah, that's what makes it tricky. Most are held before the Tour these days, but it's hard to check for way back then. Old photos though are handy.

Yep, those are the other two. And the double was indeed Riis whilst EPO'd up to the max.

Be honest now, did Mr.Wikipedia lend a hand? Ahem....

Actually, sh!te, I've just realised I can't count up to 8. There are in fact 8 riders in the list I have in front of me, not 7.

    So there's one more...

The first five I got I knew off the top of my head and checked to make sure. The other two were helped along by http://www.cyclingwebsite.net/

    Eight? Now I'm stumped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭penfold83

If I remember rightly, the 8th fella waived his right to wear the full national champions jersey and chose instead to go for the trim on the sleeves. I don't ever remember him wearing the full national champions jersey.

Nope. And amazingly Anquetil never won a national championship either.

    yes!
Miguel Indurain started the 1992 Tour de France with only the colours of the Spanish flag on his arm bands because the sponsor wanted the maximum exposure.

D'oh. I read through the list twice and missed it because of the double surname.

Indurain is indeed the correct answer. Won the Spanish nationals in 1992.

If you're not already familiar with it http://www.memoire-du-cyclisme.net/ is a great resource for cycling results going back to the earliest races.
