I bought the car last month, and its insured now and i just want to drive it but I cant cause theres no tax on it.
She told me she sent the log-book off ages ago, but i rang Shannon Today, and they said the car is still in her name.
So I rang her, and she;s willing to play ball.

BUT WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET IT TAXED NOW????

    thx

Same thing happened to me a while back, only I was the one who sent the logbook. AFAIK, the only option is for her to order a replacement log book, and then send it off again. Thats what I did. Don't think you or her can register a change of ownership over the phone or email or anything.

If it's in her name, she can tax it. But since the insurance is in your name, she can't tax it. Drive it, gardai know of this proceedure, and although it is illegal to drive without tax, they are normally very easy on you if you have just bought the car. Get your friend to write out a reciept, and both of ye sign the date on it. Keep this with you, with a valid insurance cert, and a printed out and filled in motor tax renewal form. This wil show them that you're not trying to avoid paying tax, and just waiting on the log book. Make sure when you date it to date it recently. If she hasn't sent off the log book properly you can amend the date of sale.

Warning: It is illegal to drive with no tax, and depending on how long the tax is out, your car can get taken off you and you can be given a fine.

Not true, if it is insured it can be taxed - registered owner has nothing to do with it.

Registered owner doesn't even have to be the LEGAL owner.

Ring the tax office/garda station, i think there is a form that will tax and change the ownership without VLC, if you both sign it. Shannon will then issue a new VLC.

Maybe your right. I did that before (with a similar case) and just put down the new owners insurance and it worked fine, didn't know if it was legal so I didn't post it.

RF100a is the motortax renewal form anyway.

Shannon are usually slow in doing this. When you get the answering machine, it will say the date of ownership change that they are now processing. Took me about six weeks to get mine last year. Even though things are quieter this year, I still wouldn't expect them to be a model of efficiency...

If she gets a replacement log book, then the 2 of you can sign it, and you can bring it to your local tax office to tax the car. They'll take the logbook and send it to Shannon.

Also, if she got a tax reminder, it'll have the pin number for online taxing, so you can tax it online and put in your insurance details.

Lastly, you can just fill in a tax renewal form with the cars details and your insurance details, bring it to the tax office, and pay your tax.

    Hope this helps.

Quick warning just be careful where you drive while waiting for the car to be taxed. a friend was telling me about a lady she is neighbours with had the car taken off her and she and the 2 small kids were left on the side of the road by the guard who stopped her.

This happened in the midlands, and from what I've been told the guard who did this refused to give her a lift, and left her on the side of the main road for someone to collect them!

Not that the lift (or non-offer) has any bearing on the issue, but this guard is very very strict on tax, and will take the car off you, no questions asked, no excuses taken!!. So be careful if you drive in the midlands area, just incase you get stopped! You could end up stranded with no car!

The general rule is that the car can be seized 2 calender months after the tax expires. EG, if the tax expires on 28/02/09, then the car can be seized on or after 01/05/09.

For taxing, you can tax without arrears up to the 5th day of the second month.
EG, if the tax expires on 28.02/09, then the car can be taxed without arrears up to 05/04/09. A 3 month disc purchased then will be valid until 31/05/09.

After this, you must pay arrears for the untaxed period, or get the car sworn off the road at a Garda station.

If you intend to take the car off the road but wish to not waste the tax you have already paid, then you can, IIRC, inform your local tax office and, again, get it sworn off the road. This can only be done in advance of the car being taken off the road, not after. I would assume that you must return the tax disc at the beginning of the off-the-road period. Having never done this, I don't know how it works (the ability to do this could, therefore, be an urban legend!!!).

She has a new car the last 2 years, so I's say the car hasnt been taxed since then, so I dont think I could tax it online with me insurance details, i'd have to pay too much.
She said she is sending the replacement form back to shannon today to gat another log-book, then I can tax it myself when we both sign it, is that right??

You're aware that the field for insurance details when taxing online is at best ignored and at worst actually blackholed, right?
