Importing Old but not classic cars?

Hi I've just imported a 1996 car and Im not sure what the story is with registering it?
Most of the information I'm getting seems to be in relation to either nearly new or classic cars.
Do I pay based on the Co2 emmisions or just the open market selling price?
And do the new tax bands apply or does it still go by the old system.
    Thanks in advance.

Your VRT will be based under the old system of engine size. Only cars registered after July 1st 2008 have the VRT calculated on emissions.

    Go to:
    https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showVRT
to calculate what you owe Revenue for the car then head down to the nearest office to register it (with the car so they can inspect it).

The road tax will be based on the engine size as it was registered somewhere pre-2008, you can check it here: https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/staticContent.do?page=motortaxrates

Then get plates for it (roughly €20) and away you go.

Afraid your wrong there, VRT on ALL cars are now emission based (with the exception of cars 30 years or older), if there are no emissions data they will be charged at the highest tax rate. ROAD TAX on all pre 2008 cars is based on engine size, after 2008 ROAD TAX is based on emissions

Aye you have it there. OP dependant on car, but the minimum is something like €800 vrt, open to correction?

Hi thanks for the info, I got the VRT rate off them and they're saying E720!!!

This for a car thats only worth about E300!!
    What a scam!
My guess is theres no emmisions data and as said above they're charging the maximum rate, is there any way at all I can find out the vehicles emmisions and prove it doesnt belong in this category?

    1996 Lada Niva Hussar 1.7i
